  • Hard News: An interview with Ben Goldacre, in reply to Russell Brown,

Otoh, I do enjoy the fact that my doctor takes me seriously when I tell him I've read up on something.

When my GP finally diagnosed my M.E. (not at my pushing - it was a complete surprise), he said "within 24 hours you'll know more about this than I ever will." And then he said the bit that's kept me on his books - "Let me know if they find any treatment that helps".

  • Hard News: Three Dreams, in reply to Joe Wylie,

While some dreams are seamlessly realistic, others have very shabby production values.

Budgets cuts for the arts are to blame.

It was a dark and stormy night… wait that’s Peanuts.

Edward Bulwer Lytton, actually. Schultz was deliberately referencing him.

  • Hard News: Three Dreams, in reply to Russell Brown,

Different thing, but two or three times I've woken up to go for a pee, come back to bed and thought "I liked that dream" and been able to go back into it.

I always know it's time to wake up and go for a pee because I start peeing into all sorts of cavities because there's never a toilet.

Okay, that might just be the weirdest thing I've ever typed on PAS...

  • Hard News: Three Dreams, in reply to Russell Brown,

Do y'all have the remembered-as-real thing?

Yup, on a number of occasions. I've had falling dreams, but very few flying dreams. I think I always know, in the back of my dream, that I'm dreaming and sometimes use that to wake up, before I hit the ground.

I've more recently had dreams that are like watching a movie. Last night I got attacked by amphibious weasels which was very weird, and a storyline that seemed familiar even as it happened, like I knew what was coming next. I blame the meds.

  • Hard News: This. Is. Crazy., in reply to Russell Brown,

Or to put it another way, several meth labs for every meth user in the country.

Bill English would chalk that up as a surplus!

Well done indeed, and even the fact that Bernard Orsman got one too doesn't diminish your (our? you're very kind) achievement. Long may it continue!

As one of those who've tried your patience, I think I've learned something too ;-)

  • Hard News: Media Take: Heavy topics, in reply to Shane Le Brun,

Maybe Tony Veitch's column was always inteded to be reverse psychology from the editorial team?

That would require them to be a bit clever, not something that recent history would indicate is one of their strengths.

  • Hard News: Crowded houses, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Larry Williams only sounds insane because you forgot he is the straight guy to Leighton Smith, who is about as crazy as it gets before you need medication.

Leighton Smith used to be someone worth listening to, a long time ago now. I'm not unconvinced they're screwing with his meds just to up the ratings.
