When Ben talks hardcore philosophy
Did you mean Emma? :-)
Danielle could have a more masculine brain than Ben, or a more Tibetian brain.
I'm a long way from understanding my brain, much less anyone else's.

people who didn’t seem to grasp the immense privilege of being neurotypical in a world designed by and for neurotypicals
I'm still struggling to grasp it. Your boy was a real eye opener for me. The thing about non-neurotypical is that there's 500 million flavors. It's really hard to make generalizations about what works for them and what doesn't, or what they might be capable of. The same goes for everyone else too, but in a much tighter range.

I don't see a contradiction.
It's not a contradiction. I'm just reporting on social attitudes. Masculinity is not traditionally associated with caregiving. I can't help but feel that, even though it's most certainly not rubbed in my face by anyone. Quite the opposite, the silence is deafening.
Sorry, I'm running out of time and I have to leave it at that
Me too, I didn't say what I wanted to, but the 15 drafts I tried just didn't work. I'm pretty sure I know what you mean. I guess I don't even see the need for a model of masculinity at all. Seems like a control mechanism, to enforce gender roles, something that can easily come unstuck when people don't fit the roles.

The gender angle on mass violence does not seem to be a derail to me.
what's more masculine than taking care of and nurturing your kids?
I'd love it if I could really feel that, honestly, since that's also my situation. But I don't. I feel very much disempowered by being the caregiver rather than the breadwinner.
It's up to us men to sort our shit out - individually and collectively.
Not sure on that one. It seems to me that understanding what's going on is paramount and men don't have a monopoly on that. Rehabilitation of criminals isn't solely the responsibility of the criminals themselves, even if their active participation is vital. Same goes for other broken social attitudes.

Regarding the Second Amendment and it's amazing ability to ensure the freedom from tyranny, it's worth noting that Tunisia, with the lowest rate of gun ownership in the world, overthrew it's tyrannical government 2 years ago.

but didn’t pull the trigger because he was worried about hitting bystanders
Yup, and he may also have been concerned about drawing fire from an assault rifle onto himself. A mall is a wide open space, and a pistol is a close range weapon that leaps in the hand on every shot. An assault rifle pointed at you can fire concentrated bursts from a much larger magazine with almost triple the muzzle velocity of a handgun, so the hydrostatic shock alone can kill you.

I feel like I have to push back at it on a daily basis.
Even quite progressive people give me funny looks and say "You want to sort that out" when I tell them that my boys favourite movies are the Tinker Bell series.

Is that such a sensible approach? A number of defenseless people in NZ have meet horrible ends as result of that approach.
Yup, it's extremely sensible. Home invasion is generally for the purposes of property theft, which is a minor crime, not worthy of the death penalty, certainly not worth risking your life over. The weapon to reach for in your house is the phone, if you think you've been broken in on. Then you shout out that you've called the police, and they're on their way. Open a window and scream for help, or fire or anything to gain attention. Against the theft, your weapon is an insurance policy.

There's an argument that provocation is functionally sexist in doing so.
Totally. Just as martial training can be considered equivalent to carrying a weapon, so should having a massive size and strength differential. But law changes are only a part of reducing domestic abuse. A social attitude of accepting that it even happens on the scale that it does is a huge step.
