Cheers Russ, what a mellow selection. Did me a power of good just now, still got another hour before the final painkiller dose before bed. That Lennon one was wicked.

I think the speed of the yeah is intended to indicate the level of familiarity with a point they agree with, or at least understand. One long slow measured yeah is like "that's deep, sista", whereas "yeahyeahyeahyeah..yup..yup......Yeah!" is going from x12 on MySky to x6 to normal speed...catching up, slowing down.

    It's also pause filler, though.

You talk about drugs with serving cops?

Yes. I don't understand the second part of your question.

do tell us the cops are as addicted to illegal drugs as any dead beat street addict, because without drugs the need for all those flash undercover operations, the guns, the helicopters, indeed the very centrality of the current importance of the police as a state agency, would pretty much vanish as well.

The institution of the police has that view. But individual cops are much more nuanced, I think. The ones I know have, after all, taken dope themselves at much the same time their peers were doing it. They know the whole thing is a waste of their time and they would certainly rather be doing more valuable police work. Indeed, more than a few would welcome decriminalization so they could have a smoke occasionally, without fearing the end of their careers, and so that every person who does smoke dope that they ever knew, which could be quite a large proportion, doesn't disassociate with them. It's lonely enough being a cop.

people actually smoke the stuff there from what I understand.

They actually had a vending machine for it.

I have observed though, that anyone who wants to get marijuana in NZ generally can, and that most of it comes through friends of friends of friends, not gangs.

Yes, same. Tinny houses are a last resort, a very expensive option. The whole premium of having to manage a tinny house, and the very high risk of getting busted is factored into price, as is the customer's urgency to get out of the place. Compared to a bunch of friends basically handing each other some small bags occasionally. It's a dead easy plant to grow, with a high yield per square meter, and no processing beyond cutting it up and bagging it at the end, so it's a popular cottage industry.

But I can't help but feel that the effort that went into this case could have been better spent on other things.

Yup, targeting meth production would make more sense, for starters, something that actually is run by gangs.

Even if you buy that stopping dope cultivation should be something the police spend time on, this really was a stupid way to go about it, targeting horticultural supplies stores.

It's always going to be insanely hard to stop dope cultivation, though, it's highly decentralized. So easy to have a small operation, with very little difficulty finding buyers.

Interesting theory. I was pretty shocked by that one. Even an anthrax outbreak would have been less sudden.
