  • Field Theory: Part of the Game, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

Please be polite to referees. Rugby, like many sports has terrible problems with how referees are treated on sports fields at all levels on weekends. Many of them are unpaid volunteers just trying to make the sport happen as best they can.

This is an excellent point well made and frankly should've been the basis for my post. I am guilty of harassing refs, though usually through the TV. I also staunchly defend them after the game (mostly). But I have to yell at someone... let me drink about this

  • Field Theory: Part of the Game, in reply to Martin Connelly,

civility and politeness have declined in this country

Oh fuck I'm sorry! Nah, I'm not :) But I will say this, I have spent a long time removing gendered insults from my general lexicon. I will use certain ones among friends whom I have known for a long time or when referring to the particular body part.

As Danielle points out, "faggot" (a word I even hate to write), is a knife-edge insult to a particular group of people. I will loudly decry anyone who uses that term as a fuckwit...

...because honestly, the good guys swear too

  • Field Theory: Mr Collins in Japan, in reply to JackElder,

As a Kiwi who lived in Japan I must confess to being unable to uncover any rugby whilst there

We saw rugby on TV when we were there last year and would've gone to a game had we been bothered (went to the baseball instead). It's pretty big in Tokyo, not soccer big, but big.

In Japan it's considered a sport for elites. This means no alcohol in the corporate boxes, as the game is meant to be enjoyed at a cerebral level.

But for a really detailed and humorous look at why they sucked, try Plinkett.

I discovered Plinkett a few years back and every time I think "Maybe I'll watch [insert any of the prequels]" instead I watch the corresponding Plinkett review. They really disect the films beyond the fanboyishness.

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes, in reply to Megan Wegan,

Given Hadyn is a) a contributor, and I am just a annoying commenter, and b) they'd actually spoken on Twitter previously.

I could not sigh hard enough when that happened.

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes,

Thank you, Public Address, for making me the man I am today. I have a job I love, I am able to experience things that I normally never would, and I have met (and not met but written to) the most amazing people! Thank you and Happy Birthday!

ps. I wrote to Russell in 2003 when I was looking for an outlet for my writing. He set me up with a few sports contacts and essentially said "start a blog". Best. Advice. Ever.

Nate Silver, you're on TV dude! Jeans and a ill-fitting sports coat? C'mon!

And the NY Times has a lovely graphic

Paul, I edited your comment so the link would work. :)
