  • Up Front: Where You From?, in reply to Jacqui Dunn,

Without doubt Jacqui. But it's almost as if the historical framework I grew up hearing about (egalitarianism, female emancipation, pacificism etc) have no part in modern ANZ. It now seems a place where rich white guys stack the deck for themselves and their ilk.

    Or something :)

  • Up Front: Where You From?,

I tend to feel some pangs of grief and regret when I'm asked where I'm from. I moved around often growing up and have been quite nomadic as an adult. My family are spread around NZ as are my friends and in essence I feel I have no 'home'.

Born Wgtn - stayed 4 yrs.
Moved to Akld - stayed 10 years
    Moved to In'gill - stayed 3 years
    Moved to Q'town/Fiordland - stayed 4 years
Moved to Gisborne - stayed 18 months
Roamed overseas - away for 7 years
    Back to Q'town - 3 years
Moved to Wgtn - here for 8 years

I have strong emotional connections with landscapes I've lived in (especially Central Otago and Fiordland) but there is no real sense of home there. Moving often disconnected me from school friends, travelling companions etc and now I have only one friend I've stayed consistently close to for more than a decade.

I can't deny I feel like a stranger in my own land at times as well. NZ doesn't represent my political/philosophical bent very well but I have to live somewhere and I appreciate how lucky I am to be here.

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

Me and mine keep it simple.

She calls me her man and I call her my woman.

It upsets just about everyone :)

  • Cracker: Strike Nine (and counting),

Not convinced that identity theft is the end of it.

Mmmmm. Juicy conjecture gently wrapped in deliciously aged coincidence served straight up on a spicy bed of conspiracy.

What does one drink with that?

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

    Crikey.

I think I just experienced the strongest sustained gust of wind in my life. The deck took a hiding and the garden has been blown flat but the windows held out.

Funny thing is, 15 mins earlier I was having a beer in the sun. Shirtless.

    Shirt missing.

  • Cracker: Wallywood,

It starts with Wellywood. Just don't be surprised if in a few years time it becomes Kerrywood. Just sayin'.

    @Ben

    I liked Avatar,

But...but...but you seem thoughtful and articulate and rational and altogether too sane to "like" that steaming pile of very expensive and shiny shit.

How could it not make you furious?

  • Hard News: Ready for the Big One?,

But will the surviving alpha species - cockroaches - be able to operate the computers (and generate the power)?

I recently read somewhere (anybody?) that the survival of cockroaches after nuclear war is a myth.

Apparently, butterflies will inherit the earth.

    Nice.

  • Island Life: Everyone loves a quiz.,

    Y'know, I don't get it.

I fail to understand why the taxpayer has to pay for any MP's booze.

If you want some nice wine (more accurately, nice drug) with your dinner, fuckin fork out for it yourself.

  • Up Front: Do My Homework For Me,

The photo spread on the front of the sports section in today's SST was closer to snuff imagery than I was prepared for, and I'd rage against it becoming the norm. It made my darling cry and me feel sick...

I mean really, choosing to highlight the final, terrifying moments leading to anybody's death crosses all sorts of boundaries for me and makes we want to bitch slap some fuckin' sensitivity into all editorial staff concerned.
