Hard News: The price is that they get to…, in reply to
Much as I am concerned about the privacy issues, I agree with Jonathan that FB's biggest crime is breaking the internet. I am sad to see G+ going the same way, rather than providing a better aggregation service to nurture a world of interconnected but independent services.

In defense of Granny Herald, the moral panic was out there first. Don't know quite where it came from, but my rellies were talking about it last week and now a niece is stressing about having to attend some icky class next year. She doesn't read the Herald - word came from the older kids who've just been through it.

At the risk of going back to an ugly topic (without reading all 10,000 comments in other threads), why wasn't there an official radio station for the opening celebrations? We give traffic reports to commuters, but didn't seem to have any central reporting on which areas were filling up and how the roads were doing. Seems obvious, in hindsight.

Kiwi troops are in Afghanistan to do reconstruction and peacekeeping
Peacekeeping is a great use of troops, but reconstruction may not be. Troops are not neutral, and once they undertake humanitarian work then the neutrality of NGO teams is thrown into question.

Espiner apparently did not consider his experience worth including in his report on the news tonight, even now the story has come up.

what was definitely lacking was somewhere to buy water or an ice-cream
Some roasted chestnuts would have come in handy the other day. Generally any cheap snack from a small stall mobile enough to move out onto the end of the pier when the people do.

Has Dr. Haywood considered the possibility of expanding his research along the lines recently explored by Tatu Westling? Brave volunteers may be required to gather the necessary data.

I’m looking forward to visiting sometime this week, after cycling around on my way home from the OGB. (Great night, btw. Thank you Russell, and all the friendly people I met.)
I’m hoping that these developments will rescue the Viaduct, which (imho) is overblown as a ‘destination’ but could be a useful component in the bigger plan. I like the less domesticated waterfront, and spaces you might want to visit for their own sake rather than for a beer/meal.
Very good of them to provide cycle access right up to the viewing platform. ;-)

Nobody seems to have questioned the idea that the President has to be paid the mostest. That seems unlikely to always be sensible if pay is based on value produced, and/or difficulty in filling the position. But it is surprisingly common thinking that managers can't be paid less than their staff.
