  • Hard News: A Work of Advocacy, in reply to nzlemming,

They (and who are"they”?* The reptoids?) say, “when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. I say, “Where’s the fun in that?”

*You know, that solves it. It’s not the Atlanteans, the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, the Templars or the Reptoids, even. It’s Them. You just have to find the offices in Geneva registered to Them and it’s all solved. They might be Them.com, Them Plc, Them + Partners, but it’s Them. Them, Them, Them. Simple.

  • Hard News: A Work of Advocacy, in reply to James Butler,

once an AI is smart enough – human enough, even – to do this kind of work, how do we ensure that it doesn’t fall prey to other human foibles, corruption etc.?

Intelligence is a complex of skills, and the origin of consciousness is highly contentious. An AI that could do what is required here need not be even remotely human-like, nor even very “smart”; it would have a very narrow range of skills at which it would excel, and be utterly incapable of anything else (Q: Identify that face out of a database of hundreds of thousands. A: Certainly. Q: What is your favourite colour? A: Duh.). You might be thinking of HAL 9000 or Wintermute (I'm thinking of Tricia Helfer, but I do that a lot anyway), but the reality would be the equivalent of a low-functioning idiot savant that isn’t even conscious.

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Matthew Poole,

Done, in a complaint to the IPCA:

I am concerned that the officer who behaved with gross inappropriateness regarding the interrogation of Aaron Farmer is not facing a serious inquiry.

In particular, I note this news report:

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10719246

and this Radio New Zealand interview:

    http://podcast.radionz.co.nz/ntn/ntn-20110414-0907-Aaron_Farmer_wrongfully_imprisoned-048.mp3

which suggest that the officer interviewing Aaron farmer fraudulently, with intent to intimidate a suspect, lied to the suspect, with the result that a miscarriage of justice occurred. The officer may not have been wholly responsible, but it appears that his behaviour contributed to that miscarriage, which has been acknowledged as such by the crown. I believe that the conduct of the officer concerned should be investigated and disciplinary action taken according to judgement by the IPCA.

There has been this automated reply:

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Matthew Poole,

If you don’t think his punishment is adequate, there are avenues available. Use them. Don’t just complain on here about how woefully the system deals with its own miscreants.

I might well, but I would have thought that that was the job of our alleged representatives, as I’ve noted before. The implication might be that if you don’t lodge a complaint yourself, you don’t care, but I do not believe that of you.

Look, it’s all very well to say that this or that issue should be pursued by an individual, but as Oscar Wilde observed, “socialism will never work – it takes up too many evenings”. We have a representative democracy for a very specific reason, and if our representatives are not doing their jobs, it is their fault, not the citizens’ and this should not be used against the citizens, even de facto.

    I hear that there’s a global helium supply crisis…

There's always Jupiter and Saturn. The latter has a shallower gravity well (Uranus and Neptune are probably too distant).

I'm waiting to discover that there's a temperature below absolute zero, Kelvin, based on observations of IQ. ;)

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Matthew Poole,

OK, I’ll take a deep breath. He told Aaron Farmer, fraudulently, that he had incriminating evidence, resulting in a miscarriage of justice. Farmer, unable to deal with the interrogation process as a “normal” person would, was unable to defend himself properly (there was also the issue of incompetent defence). The officer willfully sought to intimidate him into behaving in such a way that strengthened the prosecution case and succeeded. "Perverting the course of justice" would be a good starting charge, I think.

Maybe so, but loss of “status” versus false imprisonment and the destruction of a family? I’m sorry, but that officer is going to enjoy freedom and hot meals and a guaranteed income for life despite committing what would be a serious criminal offence had he not been a police officer.

I suggest listening to this to understand the real affect this has had on Farmer and his family.

These are real people, dealing with real and long-lasting consequences due to the malice of a corrupt officer who – as it seems now – is being protected.

“Elite”? Please, don’t get me started.

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Rex Widerstrom,

Unless your argument boils down to “the stupid deserve a voice too”

    It does, actually.

I'm sure we agree in principle that even the stupid deserve votes. I'm also sure that we agree that they don't deserve respect.

IQ above luke warm is an asset

You know, there are plenty of opportunities for humour in pointing out the difference between Celsius and Kelvin, numerical comparisons with IQ and room temperature, if you know what I mean. Ie., mine is Kelvin, X's is... ahem, you know...

Personally, I subscribe to the model that all current or former ministers of education are either stupid or swine, with considerable overlap if one were to draw a Venn diagram. Tolley and Wellington (Arthur Wellesley was most definitely a genius, apparently rather upsetting that model – but he was never minister of education) are clearly in the idiot circle. That Thunderbirds puppet wosshisname and Russell Marshall likewise. Joyce is not an idiot, but a phallocephalos that can go in the porcine realm. As for Goff… well, once I would have said that wasn’t an idiot…
