Oh, it’s trying a different track now. Bigoted epithets didn’t work, tantrums didn’t work, lies didn’t work, so now it’s trying some clumsy parody of that-there high-falutin’ talk.

You know, the sheer emotional neediness of trolls is quite fascinating in a way, that pathetic dependence that they have on validation through opposition. I haven’t felt such morbid interest since I dissected a frog in seventh-form biology.

    Troll-burger. Yum.

It’s so appropriate to this thread’s title of course.

Hey Ian, you're back! Thoughgt you'd been crushed under falling masonry.

I recall that Hoyle's Black Cloud was actually quite intelligent.

  • Hard News: Perverse Entertainment,

Oh yes, Turtle Diary. Haven't read that one, but several others by Hoban. I did see a film adaptation years ago and that's worth finding in DVD. Glenda Jackson, Ben Kingsley, Michael Gambon, Jeroen Krabbe, Nigel Hawthorne. Script by Harold Pinter. It's a real delight.

There are also a couple of telefilm adaptations of The Lathe of Heaven and LeGuin liked the one made in 1980. There's a nice interview with her in the DVD edition I was able to find.

Good video rental places should have them.

    Ah, thank you.

One of the top ten of forever for me, I think.

... Just checked, and Patti Smith (Patti Smith!) loves the album too. Perfect.

OK, here were my google search terms:

    watts “your brain is leaking"

His old blog has been stopped, though it’s still going in its new form as

No Moods, Ads or Cutesy Fucking Icons (Re-reloaded)

And the worst is No! Don’t, I really mean it!

He does have an interesting and practical way for tracking his cats about the apartment, I must say.

This is also, I suppose, perverse entertainment, but with the far more self-aware intention of the object.

  • Hard News: Fridays are still for the music,

PJ Harvey has a terrific new album out, Let England Shake, and Seamus Murphy has released a series of films to accompany it.

She is, dare I say it, coming from the same place as William Blake did when he wrote his Prophecies.

    This is the title track:

…and the rest of the series has already been partly released or is about to be released. Just keep an eye on Youtube and use the right keywords when searching.

The videos remind me of Patrick Keiller’s wonderful Robinson films.

Scanning Peter Watts' blog, I noted a reference he made to the fact that octopuses don't necessarily have full control over their tentacles...

Ah, here it is! Mantis shrimps as a bonus. Consciousness is distributed it appears.

(BTW, Watts has a notoriously black sense of humour, and having recently survived an attack of necrotising fasciitis, he has, with considerable glee, posted images of the results. The images are horrifying and Not Safe For Your Last Meal. Typically, he followed it up with a post entitled "Gangrene" which showed an image that seems to be truly horrible indeed. It is in fact, a pastry. You have been warned. He is evil, but he also likes cats.)

Ah, turtles, well now, one of my favourite writers, Ursula LeGuin, uses them as a motif in one of my favourite novels, The Lathe of Heaven. They have a wonderful absurdity, and yet, ahem, dignity in their slow grace.

That novel has something to say about the virtue of a particular kind of passivity.
