Two slides on Dirty Politics and John Key's role from today’s NZ Herald ‘Mood of the Boardroom’ event. The CEOs actually do care about this too, for obvious reasons. David Parker opened his speech by talking about the importance of “freedom from corruption and transparency” and the rule of law.

Is there a magic formula for acceptable change in pain levels vs acceptable lung cancer increase levels?

Fwiw, the evidence on marijuana smoking and lung cancer is more conflicted than it is for tobacco smoking.

Thanks Kay, but you are muddling the water here. There is some interesting data that pharmaceutical cannabinoid extracts can help control (what is a tiny number of) kids with severe intractable epilepsy, but that’s a pretty unusual scenario. AFAIK there are no decent trials that show the medical benefits of smoking cannabis exceed the harms, but I’d love to be corrected.

I agree and disagree with you, Rob. I agree that medical marijuana is not what it's claimed to be -- there's a lot of bullshit talked. But the chronic pain thing is worth considering. If one person perceives a subjective benefit -- feels better and can do more -- that's a result. If they stop relying on something like Tramadol, there's potentially quite a benefit. It seems worth letting them have a crack.

  • Hard News: But seriously, drug policy,

    Meanwhile:

Cannabis use among teens has long-term harmful consequences, a damning new study shows.

The study, published in the Lancet, shows daily cannabis users under the age of 17 were 60 per cent less likely to complete high school or attend university and were nearly seven times more likely to attempt suicide.

Daily users were also 18 times more likely to become addicted to cannabis and eight times more likely to use other illicit drugs.

    And from David Fergusson:

Professor David Fergusson, leader of the University of Otago’s Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS), said the latest research was the largest single consistent study ever done on adolescent use of cannabis.

Moves to legalise cannabis could put adolescents at increased risk of harm, and “should be carefully assessed against the potential for increasing the availability and/or use of cannabis to young people”, he said.

He was touting his “gateway drug” thing on the radio earlier too. The CHDS is a national taonga but I think Fergusson overreaches his data and his expertise on this. These kids already get pot – the question is whether making them outlaws helps or harms them.

I would certainly agree with him that supplying cannabis to people under 18 should be an offence.

    4. That’s all Jeremy and I would like to add. Please do us the favour of banning us in future, Because we simply don’t care enough to partake any further. Good luck with your incessant blame-games….but don’t get your hopes up for any change.
Because Aucklanders couldn’t give a toss

I beg to differ. I think you've marked yourself out as a tosser of the first order.

Tomorrow’s proceedings may be interesting, but I’m betting Slater hasn’t got a prayer of stopping publication.

That's my expectation too. I don't think there's any more Slater's QC can say.

    What a show-off bully-boy you are Russell.
Playing up to your converts and threatening censorship as your ultimate ploy.

Yep, that's me. Regular old bully. Famous for it.

You used to be on the telly but I know for a fact that your lefty bias became tiresome to the deciders who got rid of you. No wonder you have it in for the Auckland media!
You don’t welcome dissenting views……your site would flourish in Albania.

Yes! I used to be on the telly -- and I still am! It's almost sweet that you're departing with a final act of know-nothing pomposity.

But yes, you are departing. You're plainly not capable of of arguing like a grown-up. Goodbye.

How extraordinary to think that I originally sent in a reply refuting much of the claims in the original article…..only to unleash such a tidal wave of anger along the lines of “how dare you put up opposing viewpoints!”

You didn't refute much, if anything. You've basically disagreed and then got precious when you've been called on your lack of sensitivity and factual errors. You've made it about you.

Obvious that the Public Address site is only intended to preach to the converted and woe betide any dissenting opinions.

Okay, I'm asking you to pull your head in a bit. I will actually remove you if you can't do this.

Blatant hyperbole doesn’t do your argument any favours Barnaby. To claim that the NZ economy is “currently being propped up by Christchurch is a total falsehood. It is a factor but no more so in recent times than the dairy industry and the thriving Auckland property market.

No, actually, the Canterbury rebuild is the single biggest driver of recent economic growth. See Deloitte’s view. Canterbury’s economic growth in the last calendar year was 5.6%. It has a lot to do with the government’s rockstar economy.
