FWIW I don't think Labour/Twyford were dog-whistling. Labour stuffing up the framing is sadly unsurprising. But I'm still shocked this is a story about Labour fuelling racism and not the govt sitting on its hands with its eyes shut while out-of-control foreign investment fuels Auckland's property bubble.

Jeez I hate this. Any party that doesn't want the votes of laid-back lazy-ass kiwis is alienating a lot of us. But seriously: it feeds a nasty self-righteous work-is-the-only-thing-we-value narrative that's as dishonest as it is bigoted.

I'd say also cruel, probably racist, and pretty close to celebrating a tragedy. It's like an echo of the whaleoil comment which sparked his website dos and computer hacking.
I don't think it's a coincidence - we all tend to absorb some of the attitudes of the circles we move in. -

On a slightly different note, as one of the (9 or 10) complainants to the Press Council over Glucina's ponytail article, I was pleased with the ruling* and very pleasantly surprised how supportive Press Council people were in their interactions.
It brought home that using such mechanisms to hold those in power- which includes 'the media' - to account is something we can all do.
I'd love to think it played a role in Glucina leaving the Herald, but I suspect MediaWorks bosses, despite being in receivership, threw a bucket of money at her (and HDP and Garner - bet it all adds up to more than Campbell cost .... )
* can't find the mandatory publication of it, which I think was in the print edition, anywhere on The Herald's website, other than at the bottom of the original article. This is something the Press council could look at, I reckon. Should be "banner of the day". -

Given that the Electoral Commissions proposals would reduce the overall proportionality of Parliament, I'm not exactly unhappy about this.
Me too. I'd like the threshold lowered (or done away with at .8%) because it makes parliament more proportional. Losing the lifeboat/coat-tail provision makes parliament less proportional, so tying the two together just muddies the water. It feels like it's part compromise, part pandering to public distaste for coat-tailing, and part pure expedient opportunism. Bah humbug.

Of course they might be. But it seemed pretty clear kiwi_guy was trolling, looking for a scrap. Attempts to engage in debate were not taken up. Every comment, more insensitive misogyny.
You might think engaging on that level is worthwhile, and there are places to do it. But unless you have a lot of time on your hands and a suffocating sense of ennui, it’s not worth it.
Sadly, you’re "engaging" on much the same level: polishing a grievance and ignoring the many good-faith thoughtful responses people have offered. Next time try engaging yourself before flouncing. -
Run for the hills! Glucina ditches sinking Herald for burning Mediaworks.
Nowhere in the release is it mentioned that MediaWorks staff were today surprised by an announcement that the newsroom operation is now officially under review.
Last week staff were reportedly given a stern talking to by the company’s HR manager about how imperative it is for them to stop leaking stories about MediaWorks’ internal ructions to other media.
Nevertheless, NBR understands newsroom staff were informed today they are now in the “consultation phase” of a review.
The timing of that announcement in conjunction with the one about the three new hires apparently hasn’t gone down well.
“People are spitting tacks about [Ms] Glucina,” says one MediaWorks staff member. “That appointment was a Mark Weldon special.”
