  • Hard News: Unhappy Birthday,

<dad voice> I find it hard to believe that a hedgehog would get involved in politics. I thought they were really lazy. I always heard that a hedgehog can't be buggered.</dad voice>

(Also, please please please can people take note of the fact that my name is Joanna with two As? Call me anything else you like, but never Joanne, I hate that name so much. And I got called Joanne seven times on Friday, and man, it makes my blood boil)

  • Hard News: Unhappy Birthday,

I think Ansell is simply seeing you as synonymous with the 'leftist' blogosphere. Not an uncommon thing, and probably quite a good thing for you. I can see a billboard: Browns vs Clowns.

    Squee!

Cheer up Russell, you could become the new Google/Jello/Hoover (anyone but Cellotape (r) of course) in terms of becoming a generic verb rather than a brand. Imagine the news headlines
"Protesters outside a National convention Russelled the speakers so loudly that they couldn't be heard".

  • Hard News: Don't call it a consensus,

    This was in Popbitch today:

Wonder why The Klaxons looked so out of it trying
to mime alongside Rihanna at the Brits? They'd
dropped some acid before the show. Respect.

    Hehe!

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Not taking anything away from either party or your praise Che & Jo but, um, aren't they both just, well, talking to customers.

Did we really need "social media" to (re-learn how to) talk with customers?

I seem to recall my newsagent in Wales doing that a lot. Oh, and the guy at the pub. And the lady in the fish and chip shop (my great aunt), she was always nattering to "the customer" ...

The difference here Mike is that in your example, it'd be like you could go to the chip shop and talk to the guy who was vice president of the trawling company that caught the fish, or the Marketing Manager of the brewery at the pub. You don't normally get to have a direct response from those people.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

On a completely different note, I'm really liking that both Vodafone and Orcon are representing themselves in this discussion.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

I think it's fairly silly to try and make Russell prostrate himself before this issue.....You can't expect to control speech down to that level.

I wasn't trying to make anyone prostrate themselves, or try to control speech. If this wasn't a place I had a lot of respect for, I wouldn't have made the comment at all. But we have had discussions in the past about what factors influence whether there are women commentators or not, so I thought I would point out that what obviously a lot of people see as being a trivial detail isn't actually so trivial to a lot of other people.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Stephen Crawford: I'm glad you took the time to go and dig that up. Obviously my 'apparently' wasn't a good enough indicator of the anecdotal nature of my post, and what I've read about that campaign's clear intentions to portray exactly that message in reaching exactly that audience.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Ah, the time-honoured 'can't you chicks take a joke?' defence. :)

    Thanks Danielle.

(I think the jury's still out on the sexism of 'your mum', though. I'm just not sure about it.)

It's not just the sexism aspect of it, it's also the agism - and I know my comment didn't explain that very well, sorry. I work to bridge gaps in technology knowledge and uptake, and I think it doesn't really help to have a such a simplistic stereotypical definition of people who might not "get it" because everybody has a different level of experience in different areas.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

Following up from last night's GirlGeek dinner, why do you have to say "your mum" as an example of someone who can't use technology? Why not my dad?

Yeah I'm not in the mood to drop this one. I live with three guys - an engineering geek, an IT geek and a gaming geek (well, that last one's a bit of a stretch) and I'm the only one who knows how to programme the hard-drive DVD player. Most of the time you're really careful about this Russell, but if you're serious about making sure that this is always a good place for women to come, please don't insult our intelligence.
