He writes for a living. I think what he was "trying to say" was exactly what he DID say: her parents suck, she's an airhead, her music is a valueless conspiracy by the music industry - oh, and she's kinda sorta slutty. How is it a "fight to the bottom" to disagree with his approach to the review?
-
Russell, don't be silly. Discussions of this nature do not involve the exchange of "facts" or "evidence" in support of your position, but instead must only be the presentation of "opinions", all of which are of course equally valid.
-
Well, yes: people can say whatever they like. They should probably expect to be called on it if it's egregiously awful bullshit, though.

You know, it is perfectly possible to be a thoughtful and provocative critic without being a sexist asshole. I read a lot of music and film criticism and I have no problem with critique in any way. I don't know what "culturally PC" means in this context, but telling a young pop artist that she's a talentless manufactured sexpot is the fucking OPPOSITE of edgy, bro.

I didn't say he should "just review the music"; I said he didn't review *any* of the music.

tells us much about anything than what he thinks of Lorde
What it tells us is that he's one of those annoying dudes (for some reason they are invariably dudes) obsessed with "authenticity" and other forms of purity. That's not a New Zealand thing; it's a music nerd thing which crosses international lines.

I don’t think there’s an obligation on NZ reviewers to be nicer to locals
Being nicer about the music just because it's from here IS annoying. But since he didn't actually review the music, that's a moot point.

I didn’t think it was stellar initially myself, but I warmed to it, in part through the many remixes of the songs.
I actually like some of the remixes better than the original tracks, particularly if they're a bit more uptempo, because it disguises my main problem with her - the slightly mannered singing style. (This is one of my "issues" - no one else is ever bugged by it so I suppose I'm just a big old freak.) But the songs are terrific, so more power to her - I hope she takes over the entire world (and, uh, stops saying NZ is "culturally barren" in interviews).

hey Danielle, can I be in your gang?
Yes! We can be a roving band of ranting poptimists!

And, to be frank, who even gives a shit? If there's some group of Svengalis in a smoke-filled back room plotting what to do with a pop artist, I seriously couldn't give two flying fucks as long as the popster is happy and the songs are good. The amount of concern-troll wank dedicated to this issue is LUDICROUS. Dance, or not. Sing along, or not. Like it, or not. Don't *drone on* about how we're being *played* because it doesn't follow some formula involving four working-class guys playing Hamburg and then conquering America. FUCK.
(This is one of my giant musical bugbears. Obviously. :) )
