Is all this a K.O. blow to the Domino Theory/Elders of Mecca brigade?

Saturday's tournament was top notch as usual, let down only by a mild case of battery fail, and forgetting to pack the spares.

How come Minister Joyce can't find $8m for defensive driving, but can still find hundreds of millions for a Holiday Highway? Two words - pork barrelling.
We seem to be imitating the negative aspects of Japan without the positives - whaling issues, pressure-cooker education, highways to nowhere, and now labour issues.

Jenni McManus' latest article is worth a read - but the figure below in bold is wrong. According to the PSA their membership is 57,000. Honest mistake or not? Draw your own conclusion:
Can the public expect a loud and co-ordinated union campaign of opposition, as happened with the Employment Contracts Act in 1991? Or even a general strike?
It depends on the attitude of the public sector unions – the PSA – which control 250,000 of the CTU's 300,000 members, political commentator Chris Trotter says. If the PSA decides not to join the fray, "it's likely to dampen everything down and put a stop to any militant response".
The private sector unions could mount a campaign on their own, but it would probably be much less sophisticated and would be starved for cash, Mr Trotter says.

Twas them that were responsible for the closing of the Gluepot back in '94, apparently they bought in to Dominion Breweries on the proviso that the brewery got out of retail and concentrated on brewing Heineken for the southern market. Bastards.
And I recall watching on TV back then that the "Auckland property boom" was responsible. Whitewash, methinks?

Que? Haven't heard about that one.
To be precise, if the GST hike isn't as revenue-neutral as first thought, and turns out in practice to be a Clayton's Community Charge.

I don't think that in and of itself it will cause a large impact on the polls, but I could be wrong! Like their mining decision, it certainly increases the risks for the Government however.
And the National Standards, ECan, and possibly Treasury getting its GST predictions wrong.

I think National's support among working class voters will take a hit in the next week. I wouldn't have a clue whether it's a small one or slightly larger.
Especially if WorkChoices was anything to go by for John Howard. Big time.

@3410: Do they seriously think every sick-leave taker is a would-be Kyle Doyle? Ironically the guy's a member of the Aussie Liberals. And I think you're right about someone in high office being wined and dined.
@Tamsin: it seems to be happening in Dubai on a more extreme scale, where it's a borderline criminal offence to be unemployed or bankrupt.
