All jobs are subject to the Minimum Wage Act; I do not accept that a rise in the minimum wage affects all workers, or even all employers.
IIRC, a few years back when the usual suspects whined about a minimum wage going up, the BNZ's Tony Alexander told them to 'get a life' because the minimum wage at the time only applied to 7% of the total NZ workforce.

And if well-established workers are facing the chop, they'll probably be more bolshie about it. It worked in France - all it took was a couple of padlocks.

WorkChoices, anybody?
-
There's hope yet - WorkChoices was John Howard's Waterloo.

@Ross M:
I hope the news folk who are left are able to give us a good lead on the six phantom boats that are alleged to have headed for NZ in the past year.
This has to be the second most disgusting piece of politics I have read about this and both Labour and National are now guilty.
And this from JK??
Children Overboard, anyone?
@Seka: if it's on Webarchive.org, we can still expose their hypocrisy.
@George D: a case of the law not catching up with media ownership structures. Something has to be done, but how? How have other countries dealt with the issue

The places where state house suburbs merge with "nice" neighbourhoods (and that's a handy thing to know if you want to understand what the government's doing with the impending Waterview Connection – which goes underground right where the housing gets nice).
After reading that Granny article on the Waterview Connection, I can easily visualise the protesters chaining themselves to the bulldozers. Prostetnic Vogon Joyce strikes again.

The biggest and loudest conspiracy theorists at the moment of course are the climate deniers. Huge, massive weight of scientific evidence against them, but listen to Leighton for 5 minutes, or read some nutty uttering by Owen McShane or Lindsay Perigo, and bang, that's it.
Other conspiracy theorists include the likes of holocaust denier David Irving. They're just not as acceptable when they're coming from the Right, no?
You listen to the conspiracy theorists you're talking about. Are they asking questions? No. They're stating the alternative as fact, just with far less evidence.
Not coincidentally, the Protocols of the Elders of the Penguins conspiracy theorists have very strong overlap with the Elders of Mecca brigade.

It's a lot harder building programmes to rehabilitate people than it is to chuck them in prison so we're taking a lazy way out. Prison should be kept for serious and recalcitrant offenders so that we're not just further ruining young lives. Collin's $1.2 billion profit claim makes me feel ill.
Unfortunately I suspect things will probably have to get worse - a whole lot worse - before they get better, in order for people to be jolted back their senses.

will it be any different with future mining? How many Kiwis are employed in mining currently and how many foreigners one wonders...
And even more of a burning issue still, who'll really profit from the big digs?
-
And could Mrs. Collins, Greg O'Connor or Police Commissioner Howard Broad produce any emprical evidence that this kind of policy change doesn't lead to escalation of gun violence and fatalities?
Amadou Diallo, anyone?
Suitable locations might include Waterview and Victoria Park.
Better still, Orewa or Paritai Dr.
