  • Hard News: A storm in any port, in reply to Steve Barnes,

So, a waste of ratepayers money then.

There's a whole thread, or at least a hashtag worth of speculation into what the hell that structure is for. So far, the only really plausible one is that it's been purpose built for a James Bond movie.

It's not quite high enough to enjoy a view over the remaining tank farm. Only short by about 4 or so meters. It does give a commanding view over the Wynyard Quarter, a sniper could pin down an area of about 10 hectares.

Yeah, I'd be wanting utu after that. Which wouldn't be hard - you'd only have to let people know what had happened and the GP could lose half his business.

People tell me they're anxious about looking stupid, or at least insufficiently clever.

You get used to it, trust me.

I'm on the opposite trajectory, personally. Initially thick skin, but not so much any more. This has almost linearly tracked my fall from comfortably ignorant privilege.

One of the scariest things I've had to do this year is find a medical professional I could trust in a context where I would have to reveal my sub identity.

That must have been very hard indeed. I'm curious whether you ended up with a man or a woman?

Political scientists might just call that "fascism"...

Godwin's law was invented to block objecting to fascism.

  • Hard News: A storm in any port,

Mai FM were running advertising for contractors for the port, and appealing directly to the workers on strike to come in to negotiate. In the 40 mins I was in the car this morning, I heard the advertisement about 8 times.

I don't think anyone really cares anymore (outside of Public Address and a few sundry others)

That's certainly been my impression just from friends and family that I've spoken to casually about it. Even the die-hard socialists can hardly raise their eyes from their own troubles.

When Hooton’s damning Rodney Hide’s Super City design as anti-democratic, you really do know there’s a problem.

Indeed. Although with iPredict I can't tell if these guys haven't all just turned into degenerate gamblers, losing all real interest in the outcome except in so far as having picked it is concerned.

And I'm not being silly about this but I'm just aware that sometime the obvious answer (closest port) is not the best answer.

I'd agree. The transportation cost might not be the biggest cost, not by a long shot. I don't actually know the answer, but the expensive real estate value of the Port of Auckland has to make the RoA suffer.

And David Farrar conveys the National Party's perspective, as you'd expect.

He's very approving of both Shearer and Len Brown. Which means Kiwiblog is now officially centrist. It shows in the commentary.
