OK, on further research I have eaten sweetbreads after all. Just not the particular sweetbreads that happened to be called sweetbreads the time I saw them on a menu and inquired. Those were lambs testicles. But certainly I've eaten various offal, and profess to liking kidneys and livers.

I also notice on nature shows when you see carnivores kill animals, that they seem to begin with the offal, eating the animal from the belly. Maybe it's just easier that way, or maybe they like it most.

I tried sheep brains once, just to see - in a restaurant, and with an open mind. I'm not squeamish about weird food generally (although I've never tried sweetbreads yet, so maybe I am), but I can honestly say the thing that put me off brains was not the thought of what they are, but the horrible fatty slimy taste.

It does seem to be easy to sell to the "world market" by comparison to other accents.

Mind you, Hip hop, whilst predominantly American in origin, has accents all of its own and seems to have little trouble selling. Similarly with one really obvious non-American one, the Jamaican. But when they go melodic, then it blends back. So again, I can't help but think there is something strangely apt to that kind of singing in that accent.

It could just be what we've modeled, as you say.

It's kind of odd to me how virtually every good vocalist sings with an American accent. Is it an especially musical accent? Perhaps it's because singers are expected to be capable of high volume, and the American accent is especially appropriate for that? It's quite high pitched and clear. Words like "I" and "my" become "Ah", and "mah".

Yuk. You love the strangest things Islander.

She's our very own Bear Grylls. Except she doesn't sleep in hotels between shows.

  • Hard News: Unwarranted risk,

Although I have to say to be fair to Armstrong, that the superficial stuff he sings the praises of in Key are very much the strong cards in Key's hand and a major part of his ongoing success, and his concluding comment about today's rooster being tomorrow's feather duster could be prophetic.

This John's too busy, being well, just weird.

Yes, I kept expecting him to point out that Key has better fashion sense, followed by an Oscar night analysis of the attire in the house.

  • Hard News: Unwarranted risk, in reply to Russell Brown,

The thing he is responsible for, however, is the Auckland Council's demand for a 12% return on assets.

So yeah, I suspect things are getting a wee bit complicated for Len right now.

Yup, there's a much bigger picture than that 12% for him to think about, and even within such a narrow constraint there's good reason for concern. Union busting activity, and intensified industrial action could go very sour for the business of the port. Not just the port either, but all the businesses that rely on the smooth operation of it, a very large number of which are in Auckland.

Len Brown can blame the supercity structure he inherited as mayor for his inaction, but he could still show some leadership on this issue. He has a voice.

Precisely. He may not be able to take direct action, but he can express very strong sentiments, if he does actually have any. It's crazy talk to say the elected representative of the inhabitants of this city is muzzled on any opinion about one of the biggest pieces of infrastructure owned by the city. This is Brown's chance to really flex his muscles in one of the most powerful positions in the country, to which he was elected by a large majority. National may have the national mandate, but Brown has the Auckland one and he can and should use it with just the same vigour. There is no point trying to curry favour with the central government for him - they will always oppose him - hell, his main rival is now IN that government.

As one of the many owners of POAL, I personally would like to sack the management.
