And since Mum has met many of the lovely people here, I know she won’t mind this one.

@Sofie - very serious young men. And Alex, I'm a bit like Lilith. I love taking photos of people but for most of them, it would require permission. However. This one's from the back, so I guess that's better, and anyway, all my nieces are much older now so not the same girls they were then. This was taken on the ferry to Waiheke, in January 2006. It was the first family holiday we took after my Dad died 6 months previously and he would have loved that we were all together. I like it mostly because none of us were feeling terribly cheery, but the girls were excited to be going away together, and so that made us feel considerably better.

I've been dying to show you all Rachel. She was an Abyssinian and I have no idea what year she came into our lives or what year she left it. She had a very sad demise when Mum and Dad moved up to Kaipara, but she was the most lovely cat ever. My Dad loved her to bits and pieces - she was very intelligent, and very affectionate. I can still feel her fur if I concentrate.

  • Hard News: War, now and then,

Anzac Day has always been just another day to me, and I feel very removed from it. I always have meant to go to a Dawn Parade, really as an act of solidarity more than anything else, but have never got there. I think being connected to it makes a difference. Maybe I feel as I do because the only people I knew who had gone to war were my Grandfather's twin brother, who I believe was in a prison camp and was a highly obnoxious old bugger - nowadays I understand why, as a child I just avoided him. And my father's uncle, who went to WW1 at 15, illegally, and never came back. My Dad never went. He was all set to, I understand. He had enlisted, and everything. But his father, in some way, prevented it. My grandfather, on Mum's side, was an electrician at the time, and I think the local doctor told the authorities he was a valuable asset to the community, and he didn't have to go.

  • Southerly: Bricks and Mortar,

Exciting! And tiring! I can't even imagine. I will be sending all positive vibes down South tomorrow, my darlings.

Alas, the holidays are over. So Ruby and I spent one last day cavorting with some other dogs. We went to Meola Reef where there were lots of dogs and people. And here’s Lily who is one of three beloveds of a friend of mine.

  • Speaker: How's that three strikes thing…, in reply to Danielle,

Sing it sister. I have enormous impatience with the " TV is evil" brigade, I'm afraid. I love it, wouldn't be without it. And I watch most of the crappiest shit on the box, too. Survivor, ANTM.....you name it, I'll probably watch it.
