  • Up Front: Towards a Sex-Positive Utopia,

My Utopia would be very simple: people would be kind to each other. Even if it looked like they were being unkind to each other, in a sexual sense. You know.) And I believe that's covered by Emma's Utopian Vision.

Speaking of happy girls, I reckon this one is one for the books. That’s her with her cousin (bro’s boy Digger) this morning.

I bet she absolutely loves it up there – all freedom all the time. Magnificent.

Thanks, Megan. I had genuinely never heard of her. You know that my thinking has changed because of you, don't you?

Who is Caitlin Moran? And why is she so disturbing? I googled but was left none the wiser.

  • Hard News: The war over a mystery, in reply to Islander,

You and I will have to disagree on this one. I know people who vehemently believe he did it. It's one of those things where everyone has an opinion.

Oh I am so sorry, Islander - I should have said, that there is something to suit everyone's taste who is so inclined.

  • Up Front: Towards a Sex-Positive Utopia, in reply to John Armstrong,

John, I'd just like to add something here, if I may. As a feminist of long time standing, imbued with the feminism of the 8o's where all pornography was bad and exploitative, and frankly bad taste, I had no time for porn. When I met Emma, I was still to be convinced otherwise. And then, she introduced me to the concept that not all porn was the same - she did that by writing the post that she's directed you to. And I began exploring. And what I found I considered lovely. Just sublime. It seems that there is erotic material to suit all tastes. I had no idea. Emma made me a convert. Some porn I still find distasteful - mainly the mainstream stuff. But that's not made for me. I have become much less judgemental about it - sure, there is still porn being made that, I believe, exploits women. This issue is complex, and I think still being debated. But the point is that porn exists that is not like that. And so I declare that not all porn is bad. A big difference from where I was just a couple of years ago.

Hi Gudrun. It's a bit of a long story, really. (Mine always are, I'm afraid.) Last year, our beloved Cleo (staffy/blue heeler x) , died after being ill for some time. We were both beside ourselves with grief, just devastated, and agreed that we would get a puppy, but not for at least 6 months. Well, about a week after Cleo died, Ian told me he was very lonely (he's at home all day, everyday) and he was just going to look online. Another week goes past of us looking at every dog adoption website, and then I saw her photo on www.petsonthenet.co.nz - they are a portal for SPCAs, and other rescue organisations, who put their dogs/cats from all around NZ up for adoption there. Ian saw her, told me she was the one, and I rang the Hamilton Pound the next day to find out a bit more about her. They told us she was just lovely (what 5 mth old puppy isn't) and they also told us a bit about her history (some more of which I learned late last year when Ruby and I went down to see them and catch up). Anyway, we went down a week or so later, and that's how, only a month after our old girl dying, we came to have a puppy running around.
Basically, Animal Control found her wandering the streets of Hamilton when she was about 3 mths old and she was adopted almost straight away by a family who had goats and chickens. She lasted about 2 mths with them, but whatever mixed breeds she has going on, she's definitely got pointer or something hunter-y, so I guess she tried to play with the chickens, and that wasn't so good. After she returned from there, she was quickly snapped up by a couple, who had her for about 2 nights, and brought her back asking if they could swap her. Um, no. Unfortunately, in Hamilton, the SPCA is right next door to the Animal Control so they went and got a pup from there. It's fairly obvious to me that they abused her in some way. All the staff at the Pound noticed that when she came back to them the 2nd time, she was much quieter - after only that couple of days. And when we first got her home, she was almost eerily well behaved for a 6 mth old pup. And she cringed when I said her "Ruby, no" very gently after she pooed inside. So yeah, they'd definitely made a lasting impact on her, shall we say. Here we are 10 mths later, and she is the love of both our lives (not including each other). As you can tell, I will rave about her to anyone who will stand still for one minute. Oops. But really, how can you not love this face?
