  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

I’ve been a big fan of MetaFilter for years, but lately every page I go to on my phone has an ad for Crest Cleaning in it. Those who’ve read Dirty Politics will remember Crest were the cleaning company that used Slater (spit) as a front to vilely attack the cleaning company’s business organisation and to force cleaner’s wages for government contracts back down to minimum wage.

Anyone else seeing it? any odea who I can complain to?

  • Hard News: Five further thoughts,

I remember they tried to sell it here, it was the wrong colour and tasted odd - no one would buy it

  • Hard News: Five further thoughts, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

The majority of California’s energy is already provided for by solar power stations

Not even close to that. In 2010 it was 53% Natural Gas, 14% from all renewables.

I suspect the word "new" was missing from that first statement

And it is changing quite fast - I was visiting a couple of weeks ago, a co-worker was proudly showing off his Chevy Volt and explained that he had installed solar panels, he sold daytime power to the utility at peak time prices and charged his car over night at far lower bulk rates ...

  • Hard News: A message from The Fabians,

Don't forget that Hickey was the target of Slater's Dirty Politics smears .... certain people don't want independent economic analysis out there being consumed by the general public

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

yes it sharply cut off rawshark's ongoing dribble of dirty politics evidence in time before the election, no point in spending any more money on it now ... back to business as usual

  • Hard News: The sole party of government,

Interestingly one of the biggest lobbying organisations pushing for statehood for PR and/or DC is the flag manufacturing lobby ....

  • OnPoint: Sunlight Resistance,

As much as I love Jon Stewart he does live in a media world where he has a lot more material to draw on to make 4 nights a week's worth of pointing out the foibles of others - NZ's a much smaller place, I'd (wildly) guess that there's maybe 1 night a weeks worth of politicians and media worth laughing at, maybe less.

John Oliver does one night a week and does one investigative report a week, any country probably has way more than one thing a week that needs looking at by TV media.

I think that a night a week of political satire, actual funny stuff, pointing the finger at stuffed shirts at their most stuffiness would go down well. But not as a replacement for something like Campbell Live (the only thing that brings me to TV3 or TV1 these days)

  • Hard News: The humanity,

Someone yesterday described the Fonterra announcement as "Key's rockstar economy is busy trashing its hotel room in a drug fueled haze"

There used to be four (4) 'Ian Dalziels' in Canterbury, we all thought we were the 'Ian Dalziel' of course, I'm sure...... Its a tontine with no prize to be the last one!

Yeah I get that too - problem is they keep making more, I was bullied in high school when a 4yr old me got their picture in the paper, earlier this week some high faluting me was in the news for some reason speaking on behalf of some business organisation

Oh for the good old days when I was the only me on the internet, now there are thousands of me - we gave our kids both our surnames, they're still unique

yes don't confuse the fact that they got a majority of the seats in parliament with the percentage of the votes they got ... they got a parliamentary majority from less than 50% of the votes because of the 5% threshold and all the votes that were ignored as a result
