  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to Rich Lock,

Brilliant. But how to work it into a tweet?

  • Hard News: The #Zumwohl Tapes, in reply to Joe Wylie,

    Congratulations.

    <Bow>.

I confess to being inspired both by my previous bottle of Zum Wohl, and an alarming recollection of ODB caused by Friday night spent at Auckland Hospital wondering if a foolish friend was going to die in front of me.

I am surprised the media, one outlet did, hasn't remembered that this tea chat thing is an MMP code word for vote this way not that I'm telling you to.

I think 3News responded in kind by not publishing the tapes, but instead cutting to grilling Banks over a leadership coup. They can play the hint-hint game too.

As Judi Lapsley Miller predicted in this very thread earlier today!

It is, after all, a fairly straightforward question that could be put to ACT without needing to hear any secret tapes. They're standing Banks and not Brash in the electorate. This means there is every chance Banks could end up in Parliament and Brash could miss out.

It is also likely that these things they say are not massively important in and of themselves, but serve some kind of signalling function.

In what Universe are these guys unable to have a face to face meeting to do whatever signalling they haven't already done with each other a hundred times? Indeed wouldn't they want to do it in private if they wanted any chance of real signals, and a meaningful discussion?

They can only do that for so long before all media are giving all political airtime to their opponents. Which marketing genius thought of that?

but I think it would have just been smarter to say "publish and be damned" and let it be a one day wonder

Yes, I really thought that's what they'd do. Color me surprised.

Given the way this government has consistently shunned certain media outlets without consequence, one risk is being denied access for another 3 years.

The Herald has huge readership by NZ standards, particularly amongst people who don't use the internet as an alternative. I don't think any government can afford to alienate them, and they certainly can't afford it two weeks from an election.

Key is to make a criminal complaint at 4pm today and Joyce has already issued an incredibly aggressive media statement. That's a limb and a half.

Yes, but what else could the Herald have done? Destroyed the tape? Things heard can't be unheard. The news is out there now. It's only a matter of time.

Key is being foolish with this. Personally, I'm happy about that, such an OTT reaction suggests genuine fear about the outcome of this election, and it's never going to look good to insist on secrecy like this.

I still think you don't acknowledge how far out on a limb Johns and his journalists have gone already. You don't do that over nothing.

You'd probably have to elaborate about the risks. The recording/transcript has not been released yet, so there's not much of a limb there, is there?

Heaps of this stuff needs to be done face to face/man to man, and those chances don't happen often in an election campaign

Yes, where in the 7*24*4 = 672 hours during the campaign could they possibly find the time to pick up a telephone? Or get any of their thousand flunkies to do it.
