  • Up Front: That's Inappropriate!,

I got some of my best lessons in sexism (as in omigod, people think like that? How should I deal with it?) at high school. It's where people learn about life, which is why conservatives get angsty about sex education curricula. It would be nice if by the time my daughter goes to college she was learning about how to treat people fairly. It's a better lesson than how not to be one of those Terrible Sluts.

Why must these [sexual signals] be controlled?

Mm, nobody’s pathologised dousing oneself in Lynx, buying a car or taking up weightlifting as leading to teenage promiscuity.

I think we should encourage teenagers to wait until they are adults before having sex because with sexual activity comes adult consequences.

By teaching them that only some kinds of sexual feelings are permissable? By enforcing an antediluvian standard of good girls vs sluts? By stomping on low level expressions of sexuality on the assumption that they'll lead to the full thing? Skirt length doesn't correlate with early sexual activity.

Teenagers are learning to be adults, and they learn like any other age group by playing. You don't take their toys away, you make sure they play with them safely. And I believe that the approved Conservative Position (TM) on whether teachers get involved with teaching kids about sexuality is that they Should Not.

Patterns of behaviour my elbow. In my experience the dealing of the s word says more about the dealer than the subject. Girl I went to school with got it bestowed on her by the then principal for wearing black opaque stockings. This guy also thought it was appropriate to congratulate the (female) top academic prize winners on their appearance.

Thank you for saying this, Emma. I've struggled to find appropriate things to say about my alma mater, and an appropriate place to say them, but you've nailed it. Suffice to say things have actually improved since my time there. Back in the 90s there was nowhere to complain.

  • Hard News: New Old Left?, in reply to Lucy Stewart,

It's certainly the present of political parties, if not the future. Having a woman on the top ticket, if not at the very top, is a good way to look sympathetic to female voters without too much risk of a freakout about a woman in charge like Julia Gillard (and lots of others, but she's a recent example) faced. Hasn't worked out so well for the Republicans, but.

Crappo. Now someone can easily collate all the previous rubbish you’ve written and laugh at all your posts going way back :-P Not sure if I like all this accountability…

There is a last post button on the front page, it’s just hidden under the text that says who the last post was by.

Disable Typekit is on the bottom right corner of the page.
