  • Hard News: Not so much ironic as outrageous,

In the christian circles I move in, I hear a lot of sadness about child abuse. Jesus often spoke of our responsiblities as Carers of children and would condemn vilolence of such a nature towards them. But unfortunately, as I said above, political agendas and shear bloody-mindedness and pride from christians (who should know better) can cloud the issues. I hope it's not beyond the Bob McCroskie's of the christian world to seek a bit of forgiveness on this one?

  • Hard News: Not so much ironic as outrageous,

The historical responses from some 'pro-family' lobbies to [this person] have been highly polically based and less than 'pratically' sensible. I mean, this lady is a disfunctional parent and the authorities were right to step in. It's a prima facie case for how the system should work to protect children who are otherwise defenseless. On the other hand, I still do not think the 'anti-smacking' legislation was the method to stop this sort of vilolence. I mean we are still seeing horrific violence towards kids from people who care little about such laws.

  • Hard News: Nurturing Capitalism,

Hey, this is probably my last post (trumpet at dawn), so thanks to you all for your good manners and excellent discussions this year. Thanks Russell for the thoughtful way you approach issues. God Bless.

  • Hard News: The Clamour to Cringe,

The situation in Iraq is obviously getting. There are a number of more hopeful signs coming from there, including this BBC report: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7089168.stm. Yes, it's hard to tell people who have lost loved ones, but if this positveness there continues, it's got to be good news for the region. Whether you agree or disagree with the way it has come about.

As for Iran, the latest NIE Report stated that they halted their nuclear weapons programme in 2003. This after Iran saying they never had one in the first place. So Ahmadinejad has been telling untruths for years.

  • Hard News: Ambition,

Yeah, I think Cuncliffe has ambition, but as for providing new thinking I'm not so sure. He's merely copied and the ideas that Australia and the UK have had for increasing internet speeds and made it sound like his own.

  • Hard News: Back in the mainstream,

"This isn't to say that Kevin Rudd won't be a success. He is just by no stretch of the imagination a shitkicker."

Perhaps not, but I saw Rudd on 'Rove Live' last week and he certainly held his own there. He also seems to have an affinity with the 25 - 35 age group. Or then again, was he just the pick of a boring bunch. We probably face that same dilemna next year.

On his 'Iraq pull-out' policy, don't bet your house on it happening soonish. The Aussies were always going to withdraw their troops, it's just the timing. On Kyoto, Poiliticians use it as a convenient way to grab the 'left' vote, but I believe once the details of what it means emerge, there will backing off from Rudd with all sorts of excuses.
