  • Field Theory: It's a new season,

...now I've followed Haydn's links I see quoits was already on the list.

(Assumption : The net is part of separating teams or integral to scoring points/goals etc., and not just a safety device)

According to old-time English usage, fishing is "sport" and a net is used in fishing... (Grasping at straws?)

  • Field Theory: It's a new season,

"there are 6 sports in the world that are played with a net but no ball, and this is one of them"

Without resorting to Google or Wikipedia...

    1. Ice Hockey
    2. Badminton
    3. Quoits
    4. Frisbee Golf (?)
    5 ...

    Nope. I'm dry.

  • Field Theory: Saturday at the Cricket,

There were tennis balls flying everywhere and yet everyone was able to keep a track on their own one.

Obviously, their Optical Acceleration Cancellation sense allowed them to know where the ball would land and therefore by extrapolating the predicted trajectory, the ball could be continuously optically triangulated to its final resting position.

    Obviously.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

What's so great about Foucault? I've seen his pendulum in Paris. It didn't make me feel any more able to criticise journalists. However I am convinced that the Earth does actually rotate about an axis. Perhaps some journalists and academics do as well.

The quote as attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt from the poem "Footprints in your heart"

Master Oogway... a plagiarist? Say it isn't so!

Bloody animated occidental reptilian mystics... you can't trust them!

Actually I had heard the saying before (unattributed floating vague familiarity style), but Kung-Fu Panda was the most fresherest reference in my head when I originally typed in the quote.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Looks like when I get it out on DVD when released (as promised) it’ll be time to scrub the house down or something.

    @legbreak

Kung Fu Panda has been out on DVD for quite a while. We have a copy and it gets watched regularly by the young-uns (and not-so-...)

If you don't laugh at the dumpling/chopstick battle then there is no hope for you...

On the internet front, I know that rural broadband may become a hotter topic when the proposed National Animal Identification & Traceability system gets off the ground. If farmers, stock transporters and saleyards etc. are required to participate in electronic registries and data transfer systems, then net speed in the back-blocks will become an issue.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

I also confess to luddism here, but can someone tell me whether wireless could conceivably work, and whether that would be cheaper?

Stuart, that's not Luddism. You'd have to start smashing things to qualify.

Wireless is certainly an option for areas to where fibre cannot be economically justified, but if you can lay fibre then you should lay fibre.

There was an initiative to supply rural folk with broadband wirelessly, but it all seems to have gone quiet lately. Fonterra and Livestock Improvement have always been interested in it for their customers/suppliers but it just never seems to gain momentum (probably due to costs)

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Geoff has a child, most likely a male child, aged four to ten. That is all I'm going to say.

Actually, it was Evan (me) and you are right. He is six. Hallmark probably wouldn't appreciate me ripping off quotes from Master Oogway in Kung Fu Panda for greeting cards.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Maybe it is a reflection on me personally, but it is funny how as I have aged, my reaction to these sorts of future plans announcements has gone from "Wow, this will be great when it happens..." to "Jeez, I hope I'm still alive to see this happen..."

Ubiquitous ultra-fast broadband... Auckland-to-Hamilton four-lane highway... flying cars... personal jet packs... it's all the same.

    Yesterday is history,
    Tomorrow is a mystery,
Today is a gift... that is why we call it the present

Refrain from surfing dodgy websites or opening attachments to emails from Russia while your AV software is disabled ;-)
