  • Hard News: Siren song,

The Vista C015001A error is sometimes seen when Norton antivirus gets in the way of Windows Update.

If you have a Norton anti-virus product try turning it off when doing the update. Also try right clicking on Windows Update and making sure you are in 'Run As Administrator' mode.

This may be the same situation regardless of which AV product you use.

I know this Windows ninja-ness may seem annoying to Macsters, but there is usually a way around most things...

    Best of British..

  • Hard News: Friday Media Bag,

Craig, is your avatar a cactus with a santa hat on?

It looks more like a festive Cthulhu to me...

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

We broke the RSS feeds. Not deliberately. We will have them up and running asap. Apologies for that.

Thanks for that Don. I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking it, but I think major kudos is due to you for hanging out on this thread and giving us the feedback to our queries (and we don't mind too much being your gamma testing posse, do we PA folk?).

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

    Stuff redesign:

I'm using Firefox 3 on WinXP Sp3. I tried to move the Stuff "Top Stories" RSS feed to my Live Bookmark toolbar (so I can just drop down a list of headlines and go to the ones I want)

Now Firefox just always tells me that the "Live Bookmark feed failed to load"

The PublicAddress RSS feed and the NZherald RSS headlines feed work perfectly well so I don't think it is me...

    Any ideas?

  • Hard News: Mediocrity Watch,

    Cicadas

I have tinnitus. I hear cicada song, quite loud, 24/7 ...

That's the description I use when describing the condition to others, anyway.

  • Legal Beagle: Three strikes (w/ updates),

On the non-legal/intellectual front, I am reading this thread with tears rolling down my cheeks, thinking of all the poor sods who are going to have to be murdered, beaten, robbed, raped or assaulted for these new laws to be tested...

I don't think I could ever work in the legal system. My inability to emotionally separate the laws at the procedural/intellectual level from the horrendous effects of these crimes on real people would most likely render me useless.

  • Hard News: High Noon,

Destiny Church got a few thousand at their "Enough is Enough" anti-civil-union march. They were (rightly) ignored by the pollies.

The news article estimates that 120 people turned up to this protest. Do you think the MPs are worried that the vox populi is against s92a to the point where they need to change the course of their legislation?

No I didn't get off my fat bum and turn up either... supporting the cause from afar is about the best I can do. Sorry.

  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

Are we able to get stats from Gravatar to show how many "blacked-out" people there are?
If the number is big enough, I guess that might be worth pointing out to the pollies.

  • Island Life: Go hard or go home,

A lot of smart people are already working on No. 4. (Clean Milk)

What the dairy industry needs is widespread adoption of Denitrification Walls along water courses affected by runoff.

And creating artificial cattail (Raupo) swamps around effluent ponds to clean the groundwater and, as a bonus money-spinning enterprise, produce a starchy crop for ethanol production.
