  • Up Front: P.A. Story, in reply to Megan Wegan,

    There should be five ships.

  • Hard News: Here's one I prepared earlier, in reply to Alastair Jamieson,

Indeed, Alastair. Something else that makes a lump in my throat, looking back, is the memory of a frigate going to Mururoa. With an MP - minister?- on board. I know everything wasn't golden in those days but it felt good to be a New Zealander.

Done - a widow's mite, but PA has kept me sort of sane all these many years.

Thanks for that, though Jon Cryer seems a pleasant enough chap. Another misunderstood minority I guess - I wonder if he had anything to do with Labour's list.

And *I* thought trolls were very unpleasant people that lived under bridges.

  • Hard News: Because it's about time we…,

A looong time ago, 1957, I lived in Welling ton and the expresso culture was very strong there. I recall a couple of coffee places that were owned by either Italians or Greeks. Magnets for bleary looking suits having a restorative morning coffee break. And Auckland, where I lived the following year had a great coffee bar in Customs St W. Great food too - even had salami. And an interesting assortment of customers.

  • Legal Beagle: Coalition of Losers,

About election promises - can someone remind me of what Bill English was overheard to say about selling state assets. Or not. Something about swallowing dead fish.

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

We married in a registry office. In 1961 there was no alternative and since my darling worked for the government - in the very court where we spliced - it would not have done to have simply moved in together. I was happy enough being a wife, but not The Wife, and disliked the 'my' in my husband. And later, as in my children. Sometimes he called me his wench, which scandalised some but made me giggle.

A telemarketer irritated me a few weeks ago when she asked was I Mrs Thing. I said yes and then he sked if he could speak to Mr Thing. Something snapped and I said no he couldn't. Mr Thing was dead. Which he is, alas. Make that very alas.

After we became parents I threatened to cut off his priveleges if he ever called me Mother. He never did.

And I can't resist - "Dead! Dead! And never called me mother!". (East Lynne, stage version only)

  • Busytown: The shakes,

Hi everybody - it's great to see people here at this hour. Thanks. That was 4 too many unpleasant jolts after 11 last night (Mon night) so I got out of bed, made myself a double strength herbal tea and logged on.

My house is fine, I'm fine, but to tell the truth, I've had enough. I'm sick of this game and I want to go home.

    Oh, I *am* home.
