    Just one more...
"Sway" Bev Goodwin & Jeff Thomson
Kinetic, only a slight breeze is needed for the brightly painted wires sway & rotate.

    "flowerpower" Audrey Boyle
From the Catalogue: "One hundred years ago, my great, great uncle William went off to WW1. The last sepia toned photo shows him standing among flowers, in which only the flowers have been coloured."

"In the Bag: is enough enough?" Sally Kidall
Another favourite. The location is tidal, and the tide was coming in when we visited so you could see the chair legs gradually getting submerged.

The Harbourview Sculpture Trail is open daily until the 28th. It's cheaper to get to than the Waiheke one (no ferry ride needed) & has more of a neighbourhood community vibe: includes pieces from local schools, and many of the sculptures are informed by the wetlands location & are also shout-outs to the local Te Atatu neighbourhood.

"Reduce Reuse Recycle" Te Atatu Intermediate
Look! It's the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and Sky Tower, using bottle tops.

    "Westree" Carolyn Lawrence
Te Atatu is in West Auckland, geddit?

    "Playpill" Nicholas Mans
This one's groovy and whimsical and serious all at the same time. You can push the pill gently to make it sway back & forth, but it's also about mental illness & the influence of pharmaceutical companies.

  • Hard News: The flagging referendum, in reply to Brent Jackson,

To sum up, we each have four possible actions :
    - Vote for the new flag
    - Vote for the current flag
    - return an invalid ballot
    - do not return a ballot

However, there are only two possible results :
    - the flag is changed
    - the flag is not changed

Only the first 2 actions, have any effect on the outcome. Even if the number of invalid votes outnumbers all the valid votes put together, they will still not affect the outcome.

So I suggest people vote for the outcome they want, from the only 2 that are available.

    Yes, this.

  • OnPoint: Yeah nah, but what *do* we…,

I became a New Zealand citizen under the current flag so I have a certain fondness for it. New Zealand has changed markedly since: Rogernomics, Homosexual Law Reform, the market crash of 87, Student Loans, MMP, the freeing up of trade, the increase in migration and increase in diversity and size of ethnic groups, the gradual maturation of our cuisine, I could go on. But the vibe is still the same, you can easily join the dots between New Zealand of the 80s & of today. We are still very much a Commonwealth nation, a major OE destination is still the UK, Royal Visits are still immensely popular.

Generally, a country changes its flag to mark a momentous event in its history: when it gains independence, or undergoes a radical change (becoming a Republic, after a Revolution). We haven't (yet?) had that momentous event. And even if we had, given the limited number of times a country changes a flag, shouldn't the replacement flag be an improvement on the incumbent?

Shorter me: The reasons for change aren't compelling enough, the replacement flag isn't good enough.

  • Hard News: Bowie,

Bowie with Jeremy Paxman in 1999.
    The Internet? Bowie got it.
ETA: Annnd I see Russell already posted it.

I think if you're already a fan of Matinee Idle you would have appreciated their Bowie tribute, but clearly that's a small percentage of RNZ's listenership. If you're not a MI fan, and they are focussed on a beloved icon who'd just died, it's likely to rub you the wrong way because they're DOING IT WRONG.

(I'm not a fan of The Office, really don't get with the humour of embarrassment. So watching Bowie on "Extras" singing "Little fat man", even though the target was Gervais, I cringed. I also laughed and then felt bad for doing so.)

  • Hard News: Bowie, in reply to simon g,

A propos, the non-conformity Bowie represented is intriguingly confusing for those FM radio stations, the very definition of conformity, the home of boxes with labels. Today I've heard quite a few of his songs aired, but you can hear the programmers' thought wheels turning: "We're rock, aren't we? Rebel Rebel is ours, but send Let's Dance over to Classic Hits. Who gets Kooks, is that Easy Listening?"

And yet not unexpectedly, the non-conformist Bowie tribute that was this afternoon's Matinee Idle was met with a heap of abuse.
