  • Hard News: The Art of the Interview,

My own complaint or suggestion for Media 7 on Youtube is some sort of identifying tag so I can tell in which order the segments were broadcast. I know that in theory they should be stand alone, but I do kind of like being able to watch them in the original order

  • Random Play: Soul to Seoul,

I can't say I ever paid a donation to a gallery or museum in Dunedin or Wellington, although I do remember that the DPAG used to have a policy of interrogating people as to whether or not they were Dunedin (or was it Otago?) residents. That was a decade or so ago though.

This is one thing I like about London - there are a huge number of free to all museums and galleries, with charges only for the special traveling exhibitions. Although that may not last - I am not sure if Boris is pro/anti that aspect of Ken's London tenure

The Criterion in Oamaru (Tyne St historic area) has had 2 or 3 Emersons varieties on tap for a few years now. It has a pretty good historical vibe too

I was in Woking a few months back (don't ask) where I saw a truly horrifying sight - Red/White/Rose wine on tap. The barman seemed a little bemused as well

The loud background music thing seems to be universal - even London, home of the pub seems to be beset by it. At least I don't have to listen to the Gambler at least twice a night now though, so I guess it isn't all bad.

  • Hard News: Campbell comes back,

I use video conferencing systems occassionally, as well as occassional dilly-dallying with a variety of virtual worlds - both of which are rather useful or fun. I sometimes get rather excited to think where these technologies could end up in say 10 or 20 years, assuming technological progression continues to occur. A merging of virtual and real worlds into one system would be a huge benefit to society and the economy.

We would of course need an insane amount of bandwidth to run such a delightful future.

  • Hard News: Not all victims are equal,

I was watching a breakfast BBC show the other morning and they had not one but two commentators who came on and basically said "despite what people seem to believe crime has dropped consistently since the 1990s and the widespread feeling people seem to have about the decline of society is baseless".

Needless to say I was shocked that any media source, let alone a breakfast show, would dare report something like this.

Ugh, I remember the 1997 Humanities cutbacks at Otago. Kind of hard to forget watching a grown man (my lecturer) cry in a lecture.

Any hope Canterbury handles this better?

  • Hard News: Piled in bins like summer fruit,

I spent a lot of time in E/N/C Otago/S Canterbury while home in February and the irrigation work that has gone on there in the last 5 years, let alone the last 30 is quite impressive. It is possible to now drive from Oamaru to Wanaka and see heavily irrigated land for almost the entire trip (mainly barring parts of the Lindis). Kind of a shock to see such swathes of vivid green amongst the burnt brown hills. Of course they, unlike much of Southland/Waikato have a long history of regular, horrid drought/random nasty floods combos. In fact the two things I can remember most vividly about the 1980s are the long droughts and the three big floods that hit us with regular succession

So, let us not generalise too much about farmers not organising to match possible climate variations with long term investment. Where it counts, they have.
