The SST is a classic case of law and order moral panic, particularly as described in Stuart Hall's work on authoritarian populism during the heyday of Thatcherism in the late seventies,
eighties and early nineties. Enter populism, stir up moral ioutrage,
contact the unreflective tabloid media, light the tory blue touchpaper
and stand well clear...Craig

Oh, Dr Moo.
I keep wondering when she'll finally admit that she's been a closet member of the Republic of New Zealand Party all along and only joined ACT to almost fatally undermine it. And hey, she also hates other women- check out her mates in the male backlash fraternity...

As someone who had an intellectually disabled cousin, I refuse to watch Breakfast on TVNZ until that ignorant piece of ableist folderol apologises for the offence that he has caused. Or purchase any of the products advertised during the course of that programme. Does anyone else want to expose them to the wrath of an organised consumer boycott?
Thank the goddess for Sunrise on TV3.

Let's be blunt about this.
Militant fundamentalists are profoundly morally calloused to the suffering and brutalisation of anyone who experiences family violence of any kind whatsoever.
Back in the eighties, Patricia Bartlett disgusted me profoundly by campaigning against the criminalisation of spousal rape that National Party Attorney-General Jim MacLay. Throughout the eighties, they engaged in repetitious puerile dykebaiting of feminists involved in domestic violence prevention work. Then they tried to attack the credibility of statistics and professional practice based on the acknowledgement of high levels of father/daughter incestuous rape within society. Hell, their mates in the male backlash micro-'movement' still do.
Why do I suspect that their current probelting mania is little different from this? Two words. Brenda Bishop.
But hell, McCoskrie and co are poorly educated populist scientific illiterates. No, they won't shut up about this, any more than the geriatric womenhating bigots in Right to Life New Zealand ever shut up when it comes to their desire to return us to the days of backstreet abortions and female fatalities as a consequence.

At times like this, too, I really miss Bruce Jesson.

Insofar as Trotter goes, I've long since ceased to read his work, or take him seriously as a political commentator. He has no strategic sensibilities whatsoever when it comes to dealing with the plural constituencies of the modern left, nor any recognition that there are such animals as socialist feminists or gay leftists who agree about the relevance of class and distributive justice as centre-left policies, as well as robust industrial relations and a comprehensive welfare state.
Class is relevant, but it's one constituency alone for the contemporary centre-left, although it is an analytical category and political constituency...but not to the exclusion of all else. Moreover, it is cartoonish to view LGBT, feminist or Maori politics as matters of identity alone.
Note my take on these issues:

Nigeria does have a deeply shitty human rights record.
Remember Biafra in the seventies, and the controversy
around writer Ken Saro-Wiwa's execution in the nineties
as well as associated controversy around the abuse of
the Ogoni people? And don't get me started on Anglican
Archbishop Akinola and his jihad against same-sex marriage...Craig Y

So, has anyone else read Matt Nipperts article in today's Herald, "US Funding for No Vote." ? Looks like Focus on the Family "New Zealand" is more dependent on its malignant predatory US multinational corporation parent than anyone thought...

Poor Russell!
I know, I had to have some
removed last year. The pain
is excruciating, rather akin to
a woman giving birth, although
apparently, they debate that...Craig Y

I enjoyed the fact that Dakta Green pipped UFNZ's Judy Turner (by three votes- 85/82), although he drew level with the Kiwi Party's Simmone Dyer. However, in fifth place and pipping them both- Ben Boyce (Bill and Ben)- 151. Wonder if the rumours about the Mascot running next time are true...?
