  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

The current abortion legislation was written thirty years ago by a pack of geriatric religious males in an insufficiently representative parliament. Given the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1986 and sex work in 2003, it's long since past time that we followed the lead of the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria.

Decriminalise abortion in New Zealand, now.

Incidentally, has anyone noticed that Doctor Moo (aka Muriel Newman) is currently hosting a climate change sceptic on her website...?

Moreover, the information in question was taken from the newsletters for Doctors for Life and the Family Education Network which is available in the serials section of the National Library of New Zealand, and available on request.

For that matter, English's conservative voting record on bioethical and family policy issues is available if one merely consults Hansard- or contacts Dr Margaret Sparrow at the ALRANZ website.

Whoever's doing this is somewhat precious. The information is available freely elsewhere. As for my edit, surely it is a matter of public record that Dr English and her husband share particular views. Moreover, I expressed the information as neutrally as possible.

I would dissent from Danielle's assessment, though. While some conservative Catholics might feel bound not to practice artificial contraception, liberal Catholics certainly did disagree with the Vatican at the time of Humanae Vitae. My own working-class lapsed Catholic mother stopped going to church at that time, because she didn''t believe that the church should saddle its poorer members with a reproductive and sexual health policy that they would bear the brunt of.

  • Hard News: One Million Tunes,

Sorry, CR, but it does come back to good
old parental responsibility. If sock cons want
to play the family values card, then they should
make sure their own sprogs don't misbehave in
    such a public manner.

And no, I was not using Investigrunt or the
Society for Persecution of Film Festivals to
'justify' English jnrs behaviour. Cyberbullying and
abusive texting are serious social problems these
    days.

Why can't English back down, say he's sorry for
what his kid did, and we can then step back from
this little display of elbow flexing?

  • Hard News: One Million Tunes,

I'd be more inclined to give sock cons the time
of day over this one if SPCS hadn't attacked
Chris Carter and Peter Kaiser on their webpage,
or if Investigrunt hadn't tried to gaybait Peter
    Davis last year.

And as for the angle of parental responsibility,
I'm coparent of a fifteen year old daughter. If
she ever pulled a stunt like this, I'd impose disciplinary
sanctions, acknowledge what had happened, and
    apologise to the community attacked.

I always thought Stephen Franks bore an unhealthy resemblance to Murnau's Nosferatu, myself. Silly man.

  • Hard News: Graceless Islanders,

I take it you're referring to a certain sandwich chain
which sacked a developmentally disabled worker?

May I say that I find this sort of disability discrimination
and heavy handed action absolutely disgusting. I will
be urging my friends and workmates to boycott the
wretched place until they rescind their ill-advised measure.

  • Hard News: Oh Dear ...,

Oh, and here's some information on JT's brother, David...

"Double murderer David Tamihere will remain in jail for at
least another year. Tamihere was convicted in 1990 of
killing Swedish tourists Heidi Paakkonen and Urban Hoglin
and was today turned down for parole. He has a string of
other convictions including manslaughter and sexual
assault and was on bail when he murdered the young
Swedes. He was convicted despite police not finding the
couple's bodies, although Urban Hoglin's body was found
some time later. The case went all the way to the Privy
Council. Tamihere is the brother of Cabinet Minister John
    Tamihere. "

It should be noted that JT has always maintained that his
brother was innocent of the above crime.

Why does National have a "Family" spokesperson, given that all she ever seems to do is attack solo mums, LGBT families, opponents of parental corporal punishment of children, and otherwise pander to the hardcore Christian Right?

Oh. Come to think of it, that *is* why...
