I'm pretty old now but I've been listening to Nat Rad since I was about 27. The bird calls, the absence of slick presenters. No ads. It's a treasure - the way the Listener used to be.
I can't quite get the kick out of Kim Hill that I used to. I loved her when she was doing the news and political stuff.
What I do now is pick and choose - I pick the best interviews and listen to them on my computer. Love it. Love to listen to Noelle in the arvos when I'm driving home from work.
Bill Ralston is lazy I think. He can write well but he's too lazy to do any research or think anything through. What about that lovely interview with Clydesdale? Even he would have liked that!
And I'll definitely try listen to PA Radio on Saturday if I can.

I have just read Tapu Misa's column. Wow! And St ephen above. I've followed the Veitch story since the onset for some media class work I'm struggling to deal with and I think my tiny brain was trying hard to resist the media manipulation. Veitch's response in the interview with Holmes, Tapu Misa's column and st ephen's last para have now convinced me that Russel's first post hit the nail on the head.
Can't resist the King Lear quote below on the rich vs poor/justice issue.
"Plate sin with gold,
And the strong lance of justice hurtless breaks:
Arm it in rags, a pigmy's straw does pierce it."And yet, st ephen, Lear also says, "None doth offend, none I say". In Christian terms we are all miserable sinners and "he who is without sin ..."

Is this discussion over? If not, any wise interps of the Paul Holmes interview? I reread it this am - I think it starts well - then there's the question/answer bulk of it that is very Holmes-like - it's mostly about Tony's pain - just as Holmes used to try to make us feel sorry for him(???) Degenerates into emotional slush?
There's no mention of the pain of his former partner although he is made to speak kindly of her. It's about his progress under counselling which is not what the public want to hear. Surely.
Another thing - how do lawyers for both sides allow people to cover up grievous bodily harm?

Humans think they are pillars of control but the line between sane and insane (even if momentarily) is small, and fragile.
Well said - kinda Shakespearean.

Here is a link to Ethical Martini and a post on GoTH. (Not too sure how to do links) It fits the celebrity culture/kiwi bloke thing we were talking about. I must say I did think Ellis's false promos for the show were tasteless. It's all a big joke, eh?
As for my hesitation about damning Veitch - well yes I know he did it or he would have denied it as you say and there's no excuse. But the revelations have been fed to us by the media in a salacious way and a tabloid way and we should hold fire for a wee while. Look at how this site damned - well lots of us - the Tuhoi 'terrorists' - was that a media beat up or what? NOT that I'm saying this is exaggerated - the cold hard facts are disgusting - just don't think we should rush to judgment.

male violence against women, how our charming meathead thugby culture relates to that, the influence of money on justice, and public vs private spheres colliding in the glare of media.e relates to that, the influence of money on justice, and public vs private spheres colliding in the glare of media.
I like the way you've put this. I'll always remember Matthew Ridge saying "I've brought Nicky" when asked on one of those puerile reality shows what he had brought along to share. It was years ago now and I could never make my sons understand my utter distaste. That sort of blokey humour (according to Michelle Hewitson's interview with Rick Salizzo, Ellis made a "the PM is a man" joke on Sportcafe this week) is endemic to those blokes: Veitch, Ellis and Ridge.
However, it doesn't follow that Veitch is vicious man. I'm with Robbery. The facts as reported look very very bad - it looks as if he committed a horrendous crime and thought he could get away with it, marry a beautiful blonde young heiress and keep his high paid jobs. But we weren't there. We haven't heard what his former partner has to say. Life is complex.
I don't think you can take one case for which you know only second hand info and slot it into the wife-beater model right away.

How did the Dominion Post access this story? Why has it taken so long? How could medical people have believed that she had an accident? Are there things we don't know that might count as mitigating circumstances?

None of the other lowbrow crap actually leaves a chunk of its viewers more deluded than when they started watching.
I couldn't agree more. Someone at work - a well educated person - was talking about how convincing it was last time it was on. She didn't seem to think that TV ONE would knowingly perpetuate a lie and a fraud. But they do and I think we ought to have the equivalent of a truckies strike until One stops this dumbing down (and provides more Coro catch-ups).

So tax payer's money is being used to fund Sensing Murder? How can they? And while I'm having a moan, what about the two quiz shows with Jason Gunn and one of them has a pre-feminist days female co-host in girly gear and arhghghgh!!!!!
