I'd love to know why Steve Braunias was sacked - some of my fondest memories of the Listener are of his column.
-
I have just read the kiwiblog comments - interestingly no-one seemed to have read Clydesdale's report - including the David Farrar.
But they liked the thrust of the arguments he put forward. Hmmm

The Kim Hill interview was incredible. It was surreal. Can this be true? Can Massey University have employed such a fellow as a senior lecturer? I felt sorry for him - he was way out of his depth.
Funnily enough I did a Massey University extramural course a couple of years ago and was lambasted for each misplacement of a comma or semicolon! And that was a level one paper - not the work of a lecturer with a PhD putting his work forward for publication. He laughed off the question of his poor proofreading when Kim asked him about it.
I WISH Kim had followed up on his answer to the following question.
"Why did you send the paper out to the media?"
He said, "Because I care about my country."

I have just watched the show (Clydesdale bit) on TVOnDemand .Loved it - I wonder how the uni feels about their "senior economist".

I wouldn't say he's my favourite columnist, but he writes authentically and with some heart.
I know what you mean - the column I read was heartfelt and engaging.
But I feel that his heart is sentimental - and he has no self-irony.
And I find it hard to forgive him for Holmes!

Dave Hansford, formerly and controversially of the Listener, won his category and was in the final three for best overall columnist, which was won (cue massed gritting of teeth in the room) by Paul Holmes, who can actually write, dammit.
Russell, is there any way we can read Paul Holmes' winning columns or are they not available on the net? It hurts me physically to think he won a national writing award. Okay, he CAN write and I did find his article on P interesting (one of the rare occasions I bought the HoS) but with Holmes it is always about HIM and surely, surely, surely we have better writers with better insights than Holmes. Some of the writings of Dave Hayward are brilliant and column-ish- hmmm - not in print though.
And I have often had a look at the winning blog and think of it as too esoteric to be a national winner. But then again, I don't know what the criteria are. So condolences - you should have been there.

I liked Ellen Malcolm's column but I didn't agree with it. I enjoyed it because it was a a strong piece of writing. Because I'm a woman of the same generation I could identify with it - it touched a nerve.
Doesn't make me change my mind about Clinton's negative tactics. Just reminded me of - well - what the heck - it's Mother's Day - what little battlers we women are. So there.

This is a good discussion and I love blogs like those in Public Address. However, I couldn't help laughing out loud at Steve Braunias' blog parody in yesterday's SSTimes. I guess blogging is so recent that the codes and conventions of the genre are still rather weird. Any thoughts?

I am probably a generation or half a generation older than y'all and that might be why I am surprised that a lot of you are in favour of recreational drugs. I'm not coming from a "drugs are immoral" point of view. I'm pretty keen on my prescription drugs and I'm not sure if marijuana should be illegal.
How would you people who are parents feel about your kids using LSD etc if it were legal and available?

Thank you, Keith. We need to understand. I'd like to hear more about this. The blog site above ain't in English!
