  • Field Theory: The Real Deal,

I never knew The Highlanders were the General Motors of New Zealand rugby - to big to fail no matter how useless they are.

They don't have to be that big. Players are contracted for a certain length of time, as are sponsors. And then there would be the new uniforms - adidas has the contract for the Super 14 franchises but Canterbury does most of the ANZC teams.

I agree that there is nothing particular about the lower half of the South Island that means it should have team. But when the franchises were awarded Otago were good and got the nod.

And who can say whether, if given the franchise, the new team (or teams) will stay there for more than a year? And if that's the case, then what would be the point of going through all the problems with moving them.

  • Field Theory: The Real Deal,

4 - 4 with a late goal to NZ to make it 5 - 4. Then because they split the games they had a penalty shootout to decide who won the series. NZ goalie Zak Nothling shut out both Aussie shooters, Chris Eaden and Brent Spiers both scored. Great game of ice hockey.

I totally misread your first comment and thought we had lost. Go the Ice Blacks!

  • Field Theory: The Real Deal,

How about at the end of this season, the bottom four teams ANZC should be relegated. No formulas, if Auckland, Waikato, Nothland and Counties-Manakau are the last four then drop them.

I think more people here would agree with that, but...

if the top finishing non-super union finishes ahead in the ANZC of the worst performing Super 14 franchise base, then the Super 14 team should automatically lose its franchise to the better performing ANZC cup team. In other words, if say BOP comes second in the ANZC cup, it will replace Otago in next years Super 14.

I can't see this one working for a number of reasons. Financial ones mainly. And player contracts would be all over the place. It'd be far too messy.

  • Field Theory: The Real Deal,

Anyone watching Sky Sport 3 on Sunday evening would have seen their ice hockey team lose to New Zealand's Ice Blacks for the first time ever a little after 7pm, after 11 consecutive wins.

    Ah crap! Was it close?

I woke up on Sunday with a voice that sounded not unlike Brad Thorn.

Did Amy send you back ten metres?

We did go to the movies which meant I couldn't talk, so maybe.

  • Field Theory: The Real Deal,

Apologies that this wasn't up earlier. Sunday was "no-work no-sport day".

  • Field Theory: This one has rugby in it,

Just suppose Richie McCaw and Dan Carter got together - how many kiwis would still object to them adopting?

I would've thought Megan or Emma would've commented on this by now. Oh and I would object for the same reasons I objected to Madonna's African baby party.

Drop the bottom 4, and let them scrap to get back into the top if they're good enough.

Hey if Newcastle can handle relegation and Burnley can beat Man U, why not?

In fact it'd make this season even more interesting

  • Field Theory: Those Jamaican Yams,

But “at least a month” to work out if that South African is actually male???

Which is because it's not a male/female binary answer. From Science of Sport:

I must clarify this - it's not an issue of male vs female, but of "entirely female", since she may possess secondary male characteristics as a result of some condition, reported as hermaphroditism

So they are, I believe, currently trying to decide her degree of "maleness" and how much it is aiding her.

(I'm part way through a post that discusses this)

Someone to carry his pills and add them to his muesli wouldn't be too hard.

At the Olympics he said it was McNuggets

But wouldn't that require constantly keeping the balance exactly right, which seems like it wouldn't be that easy?

You mean like training constantly? :)

I might be naive, but I would like to believe there are people in the world who are just freakishly good, and not cheating.

Me too, which is why it's annoying when athletes are found to have cheated (Floyd Landis)
