  • Island Life: The Art of the Deal,

I am hopeful that the Maori Party getting into an arrangement with the Nats will lead to some positive outcomes (sorry about that) for Maoridom and a strengthening of the Maori Party itself. I have a reasonably high regard for Pita Sharples (esp when compared with Tariana Turia whom I took to be a bitter old curmudgeon but am happy to be persuaded otherwise ) and I would like to see some elements of the tiro rangatiratanga being put on the table.

Too many of the over-40 pakeha demographic (of which I am a part) demonise both Maori and the Maori Party mostly through a combination of ignorance and fear but I think that anything that helps to raise the tangata whenua into a true partnership in running this wonderful country would be a good thing.

And I would hope that the MP would exercise a restraining hand to prevent the Nats from drifting too far to the right, providing a counterbalanbce to the presence of ACT in the government. It may all be a cynical ploy by JohnKey and it may or may not pan out as he hopes but I. for one, am happy to see this development.

The MP would have been just sitting in the wilderness if they refused to co-operate with National - this way theu at least have some chance of making some progress for Maoridom and that has to be good for all of New Zealand/Aotearoa.

  • Up Front: Walking Through the Ruins,

Danielle, do you reckon there is a market niche for rental shoes?

I ask because my darling other half has (cough) several pairs of shoes that could form a nice little revenue-stream if they were hired out.

I can understand that some people might go "Eeew" at the prospect of rental shoes.

  • Hard News: And meanwhile ...,

Jeez, Craig, give it a rest...

It woudl have been seemly for the leader of the Nats and PM-to-be to have honoured the people who made the ultimate sacrifice.

And it would be seemly for you to dismount that high horse. Send your bile to the DomPost.

  • Island Life: Key and the 'nesians,

James, I have long-since given up the newspapers here - the lack of reportage with any substance or depth becomes depressing after a while. I think I have bought a copy of the Herald about twice in the last 6 years and I was looking for a job at the time. Otherwise I would have avoided it as usual.
Not sure about the quality in other centres, but the Herald having a monopoly in d'Auckland is just wrong.

Maybe I am too misanthropic about the abilities of the upper Nth Is population to critique what they read in that rag, but it is unadulterated crap.

I'll browse the on-line editions for news (mostly just Herald & Stuff websites) but avoid editorial like the plague.

  • Field Theory: Good shot old chap,

Also appreciated the F.U.N. joke - well done.

Hadyn, so golf is a sport now, when it suits you, eh? </joshing>

  • Field Theory: You play to win the game,

My view (FWIW) on the scrum problem was the complete lack of any rhythm from Barnes in his chanting of the "Crouch, touch, pause, engage" mantra. He seemed to vary the way he intoned this pretty much every scrum, so the packs couldn't be quite sure just when to put in the hit.

Both packs seemed to have the same problem in the early stages and, with the hit being so important in getting the advantage in the scrum, it took a while to settle.

Maybe I'm a typical kiwi playing 'blame the ref', but it seemed obvious to me.

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

    Craig,
do you seriously think that Helen gets more sympathetic coverage from the Herald than JohnKey does?

From my point of view it has looked like the Herald, as well as all the tv news, has smiled benevolently at Key while being somewhat unforgiving to Clark.

Not wishing to imply that there is any bias going on, more thinking that they all want to be seen as having 'backed a winner' if/when we get a change at the helm.

  • Field Theory: Rocktober,

The Kings of Leon seem to combine some frantic guitar work with some of the most intense drumming I've heard.

Not their target demographic (a phrase worked to death in our house) but I am a huge fan.

  • Random Play: Modern Life is Rubbish,

I have caught the occasional glimpse of a program called, I think, Wife Swap which can make me leave the room. There must be something we watch just before it (not sure as I try not to pay too much attention unless it is something that I have specifically wanted to watch) or we just troll into it when surfing, but OMG it is horrendous.

They obviously do a decent bit of profiling and then set up scenarios where the people being 'swapped' into the other family's life is totally at odds with the family's belief system. Such crass manipulation of people and situations for a cheap tv thrill really gets my blood boiling. And I'm not sure whether to vent the bile at the makers of the show, the participants, the channel for wasting money on buying the show or just pluck my own eyes out.

    Maybe it's just me...
