  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Lee told a public meeting last night that the new overground route in Mt Albert would be good for the area because it would provide a barrier that would keep South Auckland criminals out of the area.

Is Melissa Lee a Labour Party plant?

the bulk of evidence suggests that the "best minds, knowledge and technology" have contributed significantly to the destruction of the planet over the last 150 years or so.

Say what? What evidence? When was the planet destroyed? Why am I always the last one to find out?

And still don't know how those reflective cats eyes at the Royal Oak roundabout know to flash when someone's about to use the pedestrian crossing. That's just freakin' amazing.

    It's witchcraft, dude.

The policies of the Greens aren't all bad. But every time I hear Sue Kedgley speak about anything I start frothing at the mouth and thinking bad thoughts. Will she please be quiet?

The hard answer is to join, and then work towards influencing the tone of discourse.

Maybe then we should all join ACT? (gag... choke...)

I hope Lee knows the difference between refute and deny, Scotty.

Point taken. Although this was discussed in another thread a couple of weeks ago, and the term "refute" has come to mean "deny" in the legal industry at least. But guilty as charged, M'Lud.

And if you know anything about the 'media game', then you might have heard the idea that the worse thing to do with false allegations is to give them the oxygen of your attention.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but the fact that it was an alleged eye-witness account makes a difference, surely. This is not someone saying "my secret sources have told me X has been doing Y". In that case I'd agree the best thing to do is ignore them.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

The Greens define a coup d'état:

The latest developments are indeed alarming. However, the Greens need to work on their media strategy. Their press release is OTT verging on paranoia.

Although I'd expect nothing less than this sort of risible nonsense from Sue Kedgely:

We knew that democracy was under threat in Auckland, but I had no idea that our Government would go to this extreme. It would make Benito Mussolini blush with pleasure.

And then there's this sneering bit:

"All transition costs will be borne by Auckland ratepayers, but controlled by the Lord Hide oligarchy," Dr Norman said.

it's pretty hard to take the Greens seriously when they release this sort of thing. It's a pity, because the issues they are trying to raise awareness of are serious ones.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Craig, I saw the interview on Campbell Live. An employee of Lee's gave an eye-witness account of Lee behaving in a certain manner. If Lee did what the employee said she did, then there has to be a serious question about whether Lee acted appropriately.

All Lee had to do was front up and refute the allegations. She didn't.

We are not talking about someone making fantasy claims based on what he/she read on the internet or the bible. This is an (alleged) eye-witness account. So the Wishart analogy isn't appropriate.

Lee ought to know how the media game works. If she had fronted up (even if it was simply to deny the employee's account) she could have buried the story before it was aired.

There may still be an innocent explanation for what happened. But Lee has to take some of the blame for the way the story panned out.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

The benefit is Rankin is above the fold and the important shit they are doing is page 3.

I don't buy that. Her appointment will only serve to alarm many who previously thought Key and co were benign centrists. That perception helped the Nats win power. So again, what benefit?

I think it's a miscalculation, and when Rankin (inevitably?) loses the plot the people who appointed her will have egg all over their faces.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

I don't particularly like Rankin's appointment but, unlike others in the blogosphere, I don't think she will make much difference, and I don't think the sky will fall down.

She's a divisive character, and I wonder how much a person with her personality type can actually achieve in an environment such as the Families Commission.

The most interesting thing to me is that Key appears to have lost the plot on this one. He's alienated two of his support parties, and the appointment's been roundly condemned throughout the media. And for what benefit?

I was looking up Mr Sax on teh Intewebs yesterday. An interesting character, to say the least.

Have you also noticed how every nutjob/fundie/string-em-up/climate-change-denier group in this country seems to have links with Muriel Newman?

  • Island Life: Effective Immediately,

I have been told that the Jewish community (and by community I imagine it is some representing body) is consulted on each ad before they screen, and the ad will not go ahead if they do not approve of it.

Are you serious, or are you pulling our leg? Why would they consult unless there was some perception of anti-semitism to start with?
