I haven’t given nearly enough thought to the relationship between Farrar and the National Party comms machine, nor to the role that he plays in testing, seeding and propagating National Party messages.

I'm confused now. So you're saying that Kiwiblog might not be the official National Party website?

Grant, thank you for your posts. You are an inspiration to me. I wrote this in your honour.

Nz native, the tone of your post suggests that the police brought this on themselves. They didn't. The only person to blame for this is Jan Molenaar. Several posters have already pointed out that he was most likely a bomb ready to go off, and that anything could have triggered his homicidal rage. It is frankly offensive to suggest that our drug laws have anything to do with this tragedy, when the blame lies entirely with one person.

"Making sure nobody else dies" should not extend privileges to the criminal. Police policy in this case will only embolden more criminals to attempt to "out do" the Napier episode.

Grant, judging by this and your previous posts, you seem to have a lot of rage. Are you armed?

Come on this is New Zealand - carpet bombing an entire neighbourhood could help deal with a big chunk of the wool glut - I'm sure there were at least 3 Nat cabinet ministers down there trying to persuade them to load up with carpets the minute they heard it was on

Have you ever had to lift a roll of carpet? The offender would have been squashed in a second. As would anyone else in the vicinity of the flying fluff-missile. Unacceptable collateral damage.

We wasted a life, hours of policetime, thousands of dollars on a low level drug bust that even if it did go well wouldn't have made one dent on criminal drug activity. He was hardly Mr Asia.

I don't think we can blame the resulting mess caused by Molenaar's extreme overreaction on the current drug laws. Who's to say the guy wouldn't have gone nuts over something else? Like a pushy Jehovah's Witness at his door?

My favourite was dropping heavy things on the house from a helicopter, to crush it and the man within.

And if we'd still had an adequate air force we could have carpet-bombed the entire neighbourhood. (I believe the military euphemistically call this a "targeted air strike")

That might have satisfied talkback radio at least.

The 'trend' I was referring to the aftermath of the Project Lincoln recommendations. The use of LAVs in Napier is one of the consequences of these.

Still not seeing a trend here. The guy was tooled up with guns and explosives. What equipment exactly should the police have used? Horses?

Weren't the police just using the best tools for the job? So what if it meant some LAVs got to drive down Napier's streets?

Or is there some sinister army threat to NZ's democracy that I've missed hearing about?

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Sounds like a sad and cynical stunt by a tatty (or should that be "titty"?) newspaper to breathe more life into the sordid affair.

Grant, you've missed your chance to be a hero, because it sounds like the siege is over. You should have flown straight to Napier, marched up to the police cordon and explained to them that due to your expertise in police operations, weapons, explosives and psychology (no doubt learned through numerous viewings of Die Hard), you were the man for the job. There would have been a Hollywood movie in it for sure, and an appearance on Oprah.

Now we'll never believe how much of a trained assasin you are. To us you'll always be a dick.

Can people possibly lay off the Kiwibog-esque "kill the bastard now" talk? If the police think they can resolve the situation without further loss of life, let them do it. The guy could be seriously mentally ill, for all we know.
