The Great Depression ended alcohol prohibition at least as much for someone pointing out how much tax could be raised from sales as any moralising. Perhaps our current state of near financial collapse will get governments hunting for unrealised revenue streams and Coke can go back to being coke.

I mean, forty years since Stonewall, what could be left to do?
Nothing more, in fact I'd like to raise a request with teh gayz conspiracy that they stop the NZ movement right here, right now.
In Europe queer activism has charged straight across the political spectrum from the left so fast that is now proceeding out the other side. Seems every damned far right, immigrant bashing, xenphobic political party in Europe has a gay or gay-er or gay friendly leader.
Mind you it must screw with Ian Wishart on so many levels: "Invigilate reports on the scary barbarian immigrants of Europe and applauds the stance taken by Pym Fortuy...(oops no)...Jorg Haid...(oh really?)...Geert Wilde...(he supports what?!)." So I suppose it is slightly funny.

Inflicting pain, be it physical or mental, on another person in order that they comply to your demands is illegal under article 26 of the Geneva convention, is it not?. Well, if you are a prisoner of war it is, maybe we don't treat our kids as well as that.
You probably aren't allowed to shoot them if they attempt to run away either.

What was significant is how important the Standard and Poors credit rating is to Key. It seems to be the most important thing to him.
It is important. If we do get a downgrade we will have to provide about $200,000,000 more each year to such diverse interests as Arab oil despots, the Chinese Communist Party and Euro/American megacorps. Whilst I am not philosphically opposed to the odd bit of government social welfare, these are not groups I'd feel happy about subsidising.

It's hard to imagine, given the paucity of the defence case, that Nai Yin Xue could appeal successfully.
Quite, but what you are asking is that the defence case be non-existant or at least against the wishes of the defendant. Nai Yin Xue's defence was that his wife was having kinky sex with other men and died as a result. If his lawyers refuse to make this argument then Nai Yin Xue has grounds for appeal.

How can they be that expensive? I can buy an 80 square metre kitset home & have it built, plumbed & powered, whiteware included for less than $150k.
Imagine you were to rent to a 130 kg tenant who suffers from ADHD, pyromania and has anger management issues that is confined to your house for 20 hours a day and who really, really does not like you. $150,000 kitset might not be the most durable solution and insurance could be an issue.

With the closure of the American Penal Colonies many of Privately owned ships were used as prisons. Then eventually those that could sail went to the Australia penal colonies.
If it is merely a question of finding a suitable site for a penal colony then perhaps we could make some use of the Ross Dependency. What with global warming occuring it is only a short matter of time before it becomes a sub-sub-tropical paradise and we can start establishing a justifiable claim. Prisoners to be housed in shipping containers until such time as they construct locally made houses out of natural materials (ice and seals). Before long they'll have a booming economy based on the local resources (ice and seals) and be beating us at ice-hockey.

Nice to find out that the French are getting some better players for the second test and that their coach was upset by the performance.

If you want something done properly, you get a woman to do it.
Doing stuff is work and being with friends is relaxing.

This quote from Robert Heinlein seems . . . well, not relevent, but close:
This explains why my googling Douglas Adams for the same did not work.
