  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

Hey, respect! And here was me thinking that Alan Gibbs started this whole privately owned giraffe thing. You've certainly been pushing back the envelope from an early age.

Wow, the Big Day Out at the Farm, where we discover what Gibbs, Brash and Douglas would do were they dictator for a year... oh, to be a fly on the tasteful and impeccably finished wall.

Although he may not have read Dan Brown, he's seen the movie.

Au contraire, I smell a literary parody in the making. Or a first sentence at least...

"Renowned politician Hone Harawira staggered through his formulaic media outburst"

  • Hard News: It was 20 years ago tomorrow ...,

If you are bent out of shape by Gitmo and Abu Ghraib, you ought to be in a paroxysm of rage about North Korean Cuba et al.

Glod forgive me for rising to this troll, but: who says "we" aren't? State repression in those countries and others is widely campaigned against by people right across the political spectrum.

You can't really decry such repression and declare that the US has higher standards, then throw a hissy-fit at those who suggest the US might also try to adhere to its own espoused values.

Beacons of democracy need the "flyspecks" cleaned off every now and again. Be grateful you actually live in a country where you can hear voices from outside, and learn to deal with it.

  • Hard News: Miracles just rate better, okay?,

Homeopathic pudding - maybe you only get a microscopically small slice.

Try this, and check out the pub scene at the very end:

So... this thread keeps on finding new, discrete ways to be annoying, doesn't it?

I'm kind of enjoying it on an Aotearoan Da Vinci Code -slash- Chariots of the Gods? kind of level.

All helps to pass the time until my filthy mongrel Anglophone culture slips into deserved extinction.

  • Southerly: Still a Scientist at Heart,

Is this the right thread to share this charming little gem with everyone?

Taster from Chapter 2 which explains how not to get stung:

I shall, in this chapter, anticipate some principles in the natural history of the bee, to convince my readers that any one favorably situated may enjoy the pleasure and profit of a pursuit which has been appropriately styled, "the poetry of rural economy," without being made too familiar with a sharp little weapon which can speedily convert all the poetry into very sorry prose.

  • Field Theory: Zombies with Wheels,

I'll take zombies any day of the week over the dreary, cod-Anne Rice fascination with vampires that was de rigeur among many of my peer group at varsity in the mid 90s. I always found the whole vampire thing intensely annoying (still do); at least zombies don't take themselves so bloody seriously.

Yet again I'm recalling Pratchett - from TV Tropes:

'...let's not forget the young vampires in Carpe Jugulum, who try to freak out their elders by wearing bright clothes, stay up until noon, and call themselves names like "Henry" or "Pam". They even pretend to drink wine, although only "real weirdos who file their teeth blunt" actually do.'

  • Cracker: Mo' Better Reason,

simon g: good point but isn't Obama one of them muslims? Don't they revere facial hair?

This reminds me of an anecdote in Red Star Over China about the setup of a Red base area in China's (largely Muslim) far west in the 1930s. Not all of the locals were on board with communist politics, but apparently the men agreed that Karl Marx at least had a good beard in his favour.
