  • Legal Beagle: Q&A: John Banks' judicial review, in reply to BenWilson,

I guess the argument will be that ending Banks’ political career is a pretty strong deterrent for what is essentially a political crime.

In the NZ context, certainly. Political corruption exists, but is really quite pathetic in the grand scheme of things and being caught does generally put the brakes on one's career.

  • Capture: Still Life in Mobile Homes, in reply to Nora Leggs,

    off again, problem loading page….

Pictures of the infamous 拆/chāi character, that appears ominously on buildings slated for demolition. Ominously, because sometimes there can be a long, long time between appearance of the 拆 and demolition, even years. It includes pictures of signs saying "拆哪(chāi nǎ, demolish where)?China" Here, "Chai Revolution" could be a good name for the movement tearing the historic hearts out of Chinese towns and cities. Then again, Ian could've been referring to momentous shifts in tea consumption habits...

  • Up Front: Lighting the Dark, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

one could read this as a description of where/when women are at most danger, rather than why they are at danger,

That was my reading of it - the situation makes it so much easier, whereas if they had proper toilets, the rapists would have to [ahem] work a bit harder. Still, to be fair to Bart, the quotation as quoted did seem to suggest the lack of toilets was the reason, not just a contributing factor.

A red heatwave warning, with most of the city set to hit 40, maximum of 42 degrees. Gee, it was fun having to spend an hour and a half in a classroom with broken aircon.

    Square like a blast furnace.

Perhaps the best way to view the library and the square outside it, given the forecast for 38 degrees...

    Towered over.

    Lost plane.

Found plane. Funny how these things work - couldn't get the plane to show up in colour without ruining the photo. B&W, it shows up no problem. (ETA: You might need to embiggen to see the plane)

But even in day-to-day life society accepts this.

Turns it into magical light tricks and projects it onto silver screens and burns it onto DVDs for our entertaining indoctrination.

Just after 8am and already stinking hot.

Can't get lost if you can't get anywhere.

Not something to lose on a day that hits 35 degrees* by 10am.

*at Dahongmen, southern fringe of Beijing. But the rest of the city wasn't far behind.

Broken windows, rust. From a park over the (abandoned?) temporary barracks for the workers to the fancy new apartment building they’ll never be able to afford to live in.

    Towers sprout faster than trees.
