  • Hard News: Libya,

I'm not sure if those advocating intervening in Libya are arguing for intervening anywhere else at all or that one can only support intervention where the US is currently intervening and otherwise do nothing.

But that might be a straw man.

  • Hard News: About Arie,

A decent leader wouldn't have to come up with that response because they wouldn't have considered saying something so stupid.

A decent response to reports of looters would be something like "well, there are several hundred thousand people in Christchurch, not all of them are good neighbours, but we need to concentrate on those who are, and on getting help where it's needed."

But his instinct is "hang 'em high". Pity.

I suspect that in PhilWorld talk of civilised society is for wimps and losers who don't know how win the middle.

  • Hard News: An excellent evening in Newtown, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Boys toilets were a lot less appealing. Decoration was pared back, almost minimalist. Two blocks of soap and a waste paper basket made for a very functional experience.

Or a few experiences, beer was by the jug, after all.

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Matthew Poole,

That article quotes the police as saying no investigation is planned. Doesn't mention an apology (I'm sure there was one, but it'd be nice to be public, given the perp walk publicity precedent).

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Matthew Poole,

Eh? Arie's attitude is great. The police choosing not to investigate? Not so much.

There's a difference between the collective police doing generally a great job, and one cop giving people the bash. I'm damn sure some police officers are going to deservedly get commendations and awards, after investigations of their actions.

It seems likely that another is going to get away with assault, because there'll be no investigation of his actions.

(and if there is an internal investigation it needs to be acknowledged, it would be wrong for the police to deliberately put this case into the media, and then take it internal when it suits them)

    Wait,

Police have relented and allowed bail for a young man...

That's not the way it's supposed to work is it?

  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Sacha,

He may have struggled and received a corrective elbow or knee in the face on the ground. Who knows.

However you’d think they would have realised at some stage during the process what was going on and found someone more suitable to parade for the cameras as the ‘face of looting’.

Which makes some sense, but I don't get why - if he required restraining at point of arrest, and if they were keen to be seen treating looters harshly, and if they were willing to parade him - why didn't they charge him with resisting arrest as well?

  • Hard News: About Arie,

And presumably there's an assault investigation being carried out as we speak. After all the police quite likely know who these concerned citizens were, they certainly know who was in the cell. And assault is more serious than theft, right?

Probably there was some 'resisting arrest', or maybe even resisting arrest, who knows, no evidence yet, and likely never will be actual evidence.

Would have been nice for the media to ask the question though.

    See Election NZ flowchart.

We're at the first step - The PM has made an announcement. Parliament continues to sit and new legislation can be introduced and passed and all that until Parliament is dissolved, which is still at some point in the relatively distant future - mid/latish October.
