"high expectations"
Oh I have all manner of expectations of myself and my fellow beings, and I'll probably see all of them scattered on the winds of stupidity and self interest.
Would that we all did our jobs with equanimity, skill all the time and were fully present in each and every second and able to use our personal skill, intelligence and depth of knowledge of our species acquired from lengthy training and careful coaching by their parents and all grown members of society we came in contact with, at that very moment, in that truly awful situation when it was most needed.
Alas my ideal seems to high, what am I to do.

Roll on sentient beings with no hint of humanity, to whom we can task all manner of activities where being human is a weakness.
But until that day, I will temper my wish for perfection on the part of others with my realisation that, as I am not perfect, I cannot reasonably damn them for even the slightest of human failings.

Nor can I
our"weakness" failings, not that those words have no meaning or a place, are integral.
I think I need to be drunk to carry on this conversation.

It doesn't roll off the tongue, though. It sounds awkward and self-conscious to me, although it's clearly the right way to think about it.
Um ... diffabled?
Diffability?
Diffabled... diffffffabled. Hmmm. Perhaps. Diffability... diffaaaability. Difab'ity. Difffffab'ity. Yes. Better. Diffability. Meaning Differently-abled.

I’ve often thought the Dompost was a nasty rag, and their reporting of this case is very revealing, firstly in the headline they chose and then what they have edited out of the story .
…………………..
Autistic looter bailed
Police have relented and allowed bail for a young man with autism who became "the face of looting" in the days after the February 22 quake.
Cornelius Arie Smith-Voorkamp, 25, was filmed at an appearance in a makeshift court session in the watch house below the Christchurch Central Police Station on February 26.
He had been arrested for burgling a house in Lincoln Road, Christchurch, and was also charged with having two screwdrivers and a jemmy bar for breaking into buildings.
At the time, neither the police nor duty solicitor realised that he was autistc. Since then his foster family has contacted police and told them that he has Asperger's syndrome. In his case it shows up as a compulsion to steal light fittings.
Police alleged he stole two lightbulbs and an antique light fitting from a quake-damaged home.
Police said they had reviewed the case and were not opposed to bail.
Smith-Voorkamp was assessed as a very low risk of reoffending ………………Heres a link to a fuller version of the story http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-earthquake/4743776/Bail-for-accused-looter-with-autism
You can read for yourself the unimportant bits they left out .They must be acting on Judith Collins complaint about the media being responsible for hurting the reputation of our police.

Peter, you did read their other story, right - the one headlined "Police face beating allegation"?
Given that the matter is under investigation and lawyers are involved, what more did you expect them to write?

Wait,
Police have relented and allowed bail for a young man...
That's not the way it's supposed to work is it?

Generally, if the Police oppose bail the courts will deny bail. Which, mostly, is a reasonable situation.

I'm sure you're right. The Dom Post offices are only a short taxi ride from the Beehive, and the editor probably nips over there every lunchtime to pick up his instructions in a brown envelope.

"Police face beating allegation"
Someone's having a laugh with that headline.

Yes, it is a lovely demonstration of the significant role a hyphen can play in English.

+1 for "Aspie"
certainly preferable to the older label "high-functioning autistic", which, even though I know what it's supposed to refer to, and even though it does correctly stress the existence of a continuum, still strikes me as being inherently meaningless, as in itself it fails to indicate what functions are to be regarded as "high", or what (or whom) "high" is to be measured relative to. -
Sacha .... I have posted up what was in todays Dompost newspaper, they had no other story...
And are you sure the stuff link you've posted up is from the dompost?,
If your news source was the actual dompost newspaper you would not know that the "Autistic looter", as they call him, had been beaten, that was edited out of the story.
And he must have been already convicted according to the dompost ........the newspaper that is

A long way from the days when the Dom and the Evening Post actively challenged Muldoon at his peak. In fact, Tom Scott was personally issued trespass orders from Piggy himself.

Fair enough. The Stuff website doesn't always label which Fairfax newspaper the stories are from - in this case, neither of them.
-
Problem - I am compelled to avoid the term Aspie because in the new DSM-V (due in 2013) the category will no longer exist. I also question whether Aspies and HFA's share all the same diagnostic criteria. As usual these issues are the matter of some debate.
People's front of Judea vs. Judean Peoples front blah blah blah.....

But it's listed in the More Headlines page for the national section of the DomPost on Stuff. It doesn't show up in the equivalent page for The Press, so I'm guessing it's at least meant to be accurate for different papers.
Also, this link works, with 'dominion-post' in the URL.
I haven't actually looked at the DomPost, though. They're hard to come by in Melbourne.

respect where due of course
Really? Because I detected none of that.
Gioie, I'm sure you can detect that it may be more respectful to Hans Asperger life's work (over 300 publications on the subject) and Asperger's sufferers to not relegate his name to prefix doom, in the rush to conveniently slap a cutesy label on people. In the same way as we don't refer to Michael J Fox as a Parkie, or an H1N1 sufferer as a porkie.
I believe people with aspergers chose the term “aspie” (though I still have a lot to learn about the history). Plus I like the way it sounds.
Most relevantly, you like the way it sounds Sacha, but was a unanimous consensus reached?
Russell Brown,It works. And it sounds kinda happy when you say it.
Stephen Judd, If you’re Aspie and you know it, clap your hands?
Sofie Bribiesca, Clap your hands!! :)
BenWilson, If you’re autie and you know it, flap your hands.Condescension reached new levels.
-
So you're against police beating people, but you're all for slapping on cutesy patronizing monikers because it sounds kinda happy? Exemplary.

Their website seems to allow mulitple paths to the same stories, confusingly.

doubt it

Anyway, as you were, happy slapping leading clapping ...

Who's doing the 'slapping' does count though, eh.
You might also think that "gay" trivialises homosexuals, but history suggests you'd be on the losing end of that argument. This one's got a way to go.

Sacha, in reply to
Asperger's sufferers
However, I am confident most people beyond the medical fraternity would find that alternative unpopular
-
Well fortunately it's not a popularity contest Sacha, personally I'm less fazed by the clarity of 'Asperger's sufferer' than I am living just an 'S' short of ass pie.
