I love the Buller district, Lilith! I want to retire there (eventually). Those Nikaus are so special.

Here is one of mine from about 4 yrs ago from a bit further south (near Totara Lagoon). It answers the question "so, does it get a bit windy on the Coast sometimes?"

  • Hard News: Dispatches from Summer, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Having a quiet (and inexpensive) holiday season at home, and praying the Euro collapses so I can turn forty in Copenhagen in some style at modest expense...

Craig, make sure you climb the Round Tower when you're in Copenhagen. Highly recommended for some birthday exercise. It's the best and most interesting legacy of one of Europe's most bonkers monarchs.

Merry Xmas to everyone at PAS. I learn so much reading this site and love every minute I spend here.

  • Hard News: News media meets new media:…, in reply to Isaac Freeman,

I don’t think internet trolling is analogous to the hate crimes, arson and murder, practiced by the KKK.

True, but a perfect analogy is perfectly useless. If one thing provides a frame for thinking about the other, that's all we can expect.

Also worth remembering that many of those who commit hate crimes often start out doing 'less serious' stuff like stalking, internet trolling etc.

Portaloo - can be sung to the tune of ABBAs Waterloo

    My my
The portaloo is too far from my driveway
    Oh yeah
And I have needed it all hours of the day
    The vindaloo I made myself
    Is always repeating itself
Portaloo – sewers all munted, that’s what you’re for
Portaloo – CERA says you’ll be there evermore
Portaloo - 4am rush when I needed you
Portaloo – Gotta get rid of this number two
Woh woh, woh woh, Portaloo - finally reaching my Portaloo

    My my
I tried to hold it back, but it was stronger
    Oh yeah
And now it seems it represents my plight
I see Brownlee’s face on the news
He says I win when I lose
Portaloo – in the white zone, who knows what for?
Portaloo – insurance scum won’t pay me no more
Portaloo - thinking of you when I take a dump
Portaloo –no confidence motion, a property slump
Woh woh, woh woh, Portaloo – making good use of my Portaloo

    #ecnz sends me news
I feel like I’m always confused
Portaloo – cross-legged race, run down the road
Portaloo – drank too much beer, I got on a load
Portaloo - neighbours are queuing outside the door
Portaloo – shakin’ and quakin’, I’m on the floor
Woh woh, woh woh, Portaloo – making the most of my Portaloo

I would argue that there is dancing and then there is ...........dancing.

I wasn't meaning to dis Aretha, by the way. I have been known to dance naked around my flat screaming along to Respect at 1 am (sorry, too much information).

Comparing those videos, makes me think the Block of Wood one should be preserved as some kind of nationally significant reminder. Not just because it shows the buildings, but also because those few seconds of footage of Paul up on the balcony there, and the pan shot around him, caught the atmosphere of that little corner of town. High St/Lichfield/Manchester really was the heart and soul of Christchurch for me, much more than the comparatively desolate atmosphere of the Square, for example. It's still incredible to think of it not being there anymore.

And to celebrate ChCh re-opening, another glorious Bats song with a video preserving part of the town we lost in February...
