  • Hard News: Fame Friday, in reply to Tony Kennedy,

Anybody know what became of Harriet Wheeler

She and David Gavurin (husband and other half of the Sundays) settled into a very private retirement from the music business to raise their family after they had their second child.

I just fell in love with the sound of that band from the first time I heard them. I still regulary find myself in the mood for "Reading, Writing & Arithmatic" and play it fairly often. Especially this song:

Also, is tabloidism largely unique to English-speaking nations? Or is it just a case of the language barrier preventing us from hearing about non-Anglo tabloidism?

It's everywhere. Every European country has them, at least, and the style is identical. Immigrant bashing is particularly popular. Maybe not to the same degree, though, compared to the UK. Their particular level of toxic illegal hypocrisy does seem to be exceptional.

  • Hard News: This Is Not A Complicated Issue, in reply to Hilary Stace,

The dark-haired singer in Abba was a product of a eugenic policy experiment to breed Swedish mothers with German 'Aryan' men, which was quite a shock for her to find out.

Norwegian, I think, in her case, to be fair to Sweden. She was born in occupied Norway to a Norwegian mother and German soldier. Her mother fled from Norway to Sweden with the infant Anna-Frid shortly after the war to escape persecution. Which was another unpleasant example of human behaviour in the western world.

But yeah, there's a small but disturbing minority of bizarre racial thinking up in this part of the world. Don't even get me started on the Danish People's Party.... grrr.

New Zealand was still sterilising some disabled women a lot more recently than that. Our eugenics history us hardly proud either, as Hilary notes. Another reason the shift in stereotypes needs more work

I had no idea, which goes to show my ignorance. And if a lot of other people are as unaware as me, no wonder things haven't got that much better even now...

Knew I'd seen that poster somewhere. You can see the plaque marking the spot today via Google Streetview.

The sentence on that Wikipedia article that poleaxed me was:

For example, between 1935 and 1975, 63,000 people were sterilised on eugenic grounds in Sweden

    1975. In Sweden? Wow. I mean, just....wow.

On the compression front: yeah, it's one of my major bugbears.

Neil agrees with you! Always thinking ahead, that old man...

Traffic restrictions too, although I don't think that would be popular. Here in Beijing all private cars are banned from the roads one day a week.

Well, we've tried that idea ourselves...

  • Hard News: #BDOMemories, in reply to DexterX,

The thing that put me off of "festivals" was the thowing of beer cans - it reached ridiculously dangerous extremes at Sweet Waters. Seeing The Angels guitar player bleeding profusely from a thrown can was more than bad - that he finished the show was remarkable.

I saw just 20 minutes of the Sex Pistols at a European festival during the Filthy Lucre tour in the 90s, before they walked off stage for that reason. Lydon to crowd: "If you want to throw shit, do it at all these crap bands playing here, not us..."

That was a great night on the main stages - I think it ran Shihad, Tricky, Rage, Porno for Pyros, Nick Cave.

Simulcast with ginormous fucking torrential downpour that strangely seemed localised to Mt Smart and nowhere else in the city.

Billy Bragg played a lovely, cosy set in one of the smaller tents that year too.
