Sacher-Torte bribed its way into popularity by containing more chocolate than the previous winner, Schwarzwaldkirschetorte.

Before law, I thought a tort was a large tortilla.

Spot on, Jack. I'd rather dodge taxis and drunk drivers in the bus tunnel that travel the seven and a half minutes on foot through that echo chamber of noxious fumes.

Russell, ta for the links to what's up with the motorway plans. I really pity you Aucklanders with the mess ahead.

Just one other worry. Any engineering problems arising from a tunnel so close to the water table? The same issue bugs me about the Victoria Park bore. Are they tsunami proof? Try funneling that through a tunnel. It would be a hell of a squirt.

  • Hard News: Going Underground,

Having staggered my way through the Wellington bus tunnel out of necessity a few times in my youth, I can understand McShane's chthonic fear of tunnels.

But the big argument is still the price tag. Like the poor bastards in the vicinity of St Lukes living on borrowed time, the SH20 route has been around for yonks. A tunnel would just socialise the losses that were built into the privately affected property prices.

Not saying there's no pain. Rita Angus mourned the parting of Thorndon that was lost in the motorway extensions in the 1970's. But to imagine Wellington's entrance as only the Old Hutt Road funneling through Aotea Quay today? Utter chaos.

Has Meridian disclosed their use of Jeremy Wells in their TV ads? Comedians have appeared in everything from finance company to fast food ads. Artists can't pay the bills with kind thoughts.

I'd really rather be deaf than blind, except for occasional moments when I'm, say, listening to Aretha Franklin sing.

I agree. I'm glad I haven't had to consider eyesight an issue. Maybe my brain's making up for the lack of input from the unemployed auditory brain cells, but I've never had to consider laser eye surgery. If there's one thing scarier than blades in eyeballs, it's freaking lasers on them.

Amen to that, Hadyn. Hearing tests set off my tinnitus. Guessing which non-contextual frequency is real can be a headache too.

I never understood why the pirate on Zig Zag papers lost his fag. Mind you, they're taking away Jacques Tati's pipe. Just as pipes are making a comeback at college too.

But I think you can certainly argue that the government has made such abrupt and profound changes to the structure recommended by the commission that Aucklanders' consent needs to be sought.

Too true. Dame Margaret Bazley made it clear on NatRad that the Royal Commission report was to introduced as is, not cherry-picked. Now there's a limbo land of checks and balances.

Are Uniform Annual General Charges (poll taxes) still off the menu? What about the commercial/residential rates proportionality? Without the Maori seats, who will have the power and authority to marshall the various Maori voices on the Watercare etc boards?

Too much uncertainty abounds. While this could work in incumbent Banky's favour, it may very well backfire. The AuckGov report was a radical step as it was. I think the Nats and Act have over-reached themselves.
