It really was! I have more insects in pink, from the same trip - gerberas and flutterbys at Changi Airport.

p.s. I like the carpet; at least, how it looks in that first photo of the set. Rather aesthetically pleasing.

I’ve really enjoyed this thread, thanks everyone. Here’s a dragonfly from Singapore (I think it was in the botanic gardens), July 2009.

  • Legal Beagle: Referendum Fact Check 4:…,

Thanks for all the referendum research Graeme, much appreciated. Apologies if you've covered this already but I couldn't find it - are the four alternatives to MMP going to be listed in the same order on all the referendum voting papers? Looking at the sample image on the official sites it would appear so, with FPP listed first (in alphabetical order). Do you think that could make a difference to the result?

  • Legal Beagle: Now it's up to you, in reply to Jackie Clark,

+1 to what Jackie said, thanks Graeme.

Apparently STV is my second choice - I find it interesting that my two top choices are the voting systems with which I've had the most experience in recent years (at least in local & central government elections).

  • Busytown: Sons for the Return Home, in reply to Paul Campbell,

I even went into the local NZ Immigration dept office in Dunedin asking if they had any giveaways for new immigrants ... I walked away empty handed.

I looked for that kind of information a while back, for an English relative who didn't end up leaving the UK (so what we found wasn't tested). Local & central government seem to have got better at this, e.g. the Immigration NZ sites like the SSNZ one that Sacha pointed to, and New Zealand Now which is maybe more appropriate for returning NZers.

Auckland Council just provides a series of links, whereas Wellington provides a fairly comprehensive PDF (although it's a little out of date, with an intro from our now former mayor, and obsolete information about the recycling service).

There are probably non-govt sites with better information, but PA System may well be all you need :)

  • Hard News: Fixing Auckland,

Probably too late as usual but just wondering how bad the litter was at Eden Park (or the cake tin for that matter)?

I won't be going to any rugby, but was lucky enough to get to one of the Football Ferns' matches at the Women's World Cup in Germany last month, and I thought the RWC folks could learn a few things from the organisation there.

Drink prices at the stadium included an extra euro that you could get back by returning the cup afterwards (I'm pretty sure the cups were reusable). Enterprising types picked up any abandoned cups after the match - must have reduced the cleanup costs as well as cutting down the amount of waste from the event. I'd love to see something like that happen here.

Plus the ticket allowed us to ride free on pretty much all public transport to & from the match within a pretty big region; that was quite a bonus for us with a 45 minute train journey to the stadium. Also meant matchgoers weren't clogging the ticket buying queues, bonus for the locals.

  • Hard News: Fridays are still for the music,

Late as usual, but wanted to say thank you for posting that video of The Adults, I've been playing it heaps - wish I could buy the song.

Not impressed with the band name though, rather dull and it would've only taken a moment to find out it was already in use...

  • Muse: Film Socialism (or, How You'll…,

Another reason: I'm not sure about other centres but as far as I'm aware all the cinemas in Wellington give student concession prices on presentation of a current Film Society membership card. I think that's awesome :)
