Hard News: We ... WHAT!?, in reply to
Two nations divided by a common language…
Remember the first time you ordered water in a restaurant over there? And the second time? And the third? And every other time until you just put on an American accent to save yourself some trouble? :)
(Obviously a State Department transcriber should have a bit more experience in deciphering New Zealanders. But perhaps not New Zealanders who are incapable of enunciating because they are too “relaxed”.)
ETA I just listened to it with my best American ears, but I must admit it's pretty clear, even if he sounds like the usual dog's breakfast. That State Dept transcriber lost the plot, didn't they?

someone had to trot out the comparison with Thomas More, but Tim Macindoe was not who I thought might
I laughed for ages while reading all the jokes about this on Twitter at the time. The best was Jolisa's "who will rid me of this turbulent MP?" Heh.

But they do ask that people they deal with use their marketing name, believe me.
We were also meant to answer the phone with "AUT University" when I worked there. (I didn't.)

I don’t really know -why folk would wanna marry,
Until I met my husband I thought it was pointless, and then after I met him the reason for doing it wasn't the law, or changing my name (because my name remained the same), or anything like that. It was the Standing Up and Saying It in Front of People part, which I thought was going to be profoundly silly, but actually turned out to be really moving for both of us (even if we were in a Las Vegas wedding chapel and the guy performing the service was wearing a blue suit and looked like a televangelist). Rites of passage, and all that.
(Disclaimer: YMMV. Not the same deal for everyone. But everyone should have the option if they want it. Etc.)

The cowboy dude in the elevator is a famous Korean comedian.
Why I love this place, reason 457. Thanks!

Oh nothing, nothing. It's just a magnificently overblown satirical deconstruction of the art of music videos as we understand them. With a bunch of hooks and a horsey-dance. Nowt to see here.

That bilious yellow suit is magnificent. Also, I want that dude's shoes.
The Atlantic article is very interesting but sheds no light on my favourite part, Inexplicable Pelvic-Thrusting Cowboy Hat Guy in Elevator (at about 1.55). Yes, I have watched this video one gazillion times. DON'T JUDGE ME.

Hard News: And so it begins, in reply to
By god I would hate to be at a decile one school.
My husband teaches at one and no one has yet presented him with a gold medal (which we would of course melt down and sell, because have you seen how much teachers get paid?). On one hand I think their reputations precede them as Schools of Terrifying Doom, when it's actually a lot less scary and a lot more community-oriented when you're in the thick of it. (At least, where he teaches it is.) On the other hand, I have heard a few hair-raising tales from him, and there's a bit of hollow laughter at the thought or sight of kids quietly paying attention in class and handing work in on time. The pastoral stuff he and his fellow teachers have to do is fairly extensive and lack of parental involvement is a real problem. (Poverty, poverty, poverty. It's all poverty's fault.)
