  • Field Theory: In closing, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

But the Spice Girls were fabulous.

+1. People of the world, spice up your life.

  • Field Theory: In closing,

I'm watching the repeat now and must note that the profoundly weird unappealingness of Annie Lennox's Ship of Vivienne Westwood Viking Death was kinda great. When it first started I said 'is this a tribute to the "Wild Boys" video?'

Hard to beat for information and head food.

Except for Afternoons. Jim Mora, I shake my fist at you. And your ghastly Panel.

  • Hard News: Music: Radio is still relevant,

It's a bit amazing to me how well 'Walking on Thin Ice' lends itself to remixes. It's not something we would have expected in 1981, is it?

  • Hard News: Future shock for the media, in reply to FletcherB,

ASB does not stand for Auckland Savings Bank. (how could it, its called ASB Bank and no one would be silly enough to call it Auckland Savings Bank Bank would they? :)

Perhaps you could ask the members of Auckland University of Technology University (or as I like to call it, They Doth Protest Too Much University) to answer that question.

  • Up Front: The Up-Front Guides: The…, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

It’s easy to defend bigotry when it’s little more than an abstraction; when that abstraction has a face, and it’s one you genuinely care for? Shit gets real, to coin a phrase.

I discovered this week that this approach, which I still agree with, doesn't work all the time. My husband had a slight altercation on Facebook with his uncle over the whole Chick-Fil-A thingy; the uncle and nuclear family had actually taken part in the "support bigoted chicken day" or whatever it was called, *even though* my husband's cousin/the uncle's nephew is gay, sees everyone regularly at family events, and was actually sitting right there (virtually) 'liking' my husband's pro-marriage-equality comments in the thread. That sort of cognitive dissonance is so bizarre.

Also, Hamilton? You're blowing my mind!

You can have your sacrament all your like

I don't really want to be "one flesh" with my husband. It sounds like it would be terribly inconvenient.

Fortunately, demographics will gradually take its course there.

Call me wimpy, but “isn’t it great that older people who disagree with me will die?” isn’t exactly the tack I want to take on this issue.
