Must she, by definition, always be an exploited person? There are women out there who strip/do porn/prostitute themselves who would argue otherwise.
I think there's exploitation and there's exploitation. Case in point: I was watching some random German porn movie with my flatmates, who'd unearthed the tape that they used to pass around their social group when they were teenagers, and there were a couple of very average-looking girls and guys fucking. So far so normal, I didn't feel like any of them were particularly exploited, they looked willing and I'm sure they were paid well. Then in came a woman with obvious breast implants which were quite literally the size of her head, which made me feel really, really sick (and in reference to my earlier comment about being disgusted by what turns me on occasionally, no, I really really did not find her arousing), because she'd had her body mutilated like that so that pretty much all she could do for a career was porn. I felt like that was exploitation, even if it was a decision she'd made herself.

__Binik, the study's author, said he didn't actually show that women like pornography — just that their bodies react to it.__
Nor does the study, as represented in the article, appear to show that women don't like pornography. As some women clearly DO like pornography (unless you take the view that they're delusional, liars, or stupid, all of which are pretty insulting) I'd have to say... um, and?
No, that kind of makes sense, I mean, I'm occasionally disgusted by what turns me on, so I don't like it as such.

Although I knew who it'd be when I saw the ads showing a third murder and Jay saying her long goodbyes, I'm still a little surprised that they killed her off. Why oh why couldn't it have been the entire Jefferies family (except for maybe Libby who's grown on me) instead?
But yeah, I'm sticking with Joey as the killer. And I will continue to post comments here about updates even if no one else is still paying attention.

Heh. Chris Trotter thinks the fourth Labour government was the parliamentary equivalent of Sir Lancelot, bringing down the glorious Camelot from within.
Not to dumb down the conversation or anything, but did anyone else read the article in last month's Metro and go "Damn, Chris Trotter was kinda hot in 1981"?

If you can't, I'll agree, pack my bags and leave Wellington immediately.
Are you worried you're being run out of town because of your article, Damian?

Although of course I'd never idly surf the internet on the public's dollar, assuming I was the type of person who'd do that, I would have lost count of the number of wikipedia posts I would have edited, using a government IP address - trying to save the world by fixing one apostrophe catastrophe at a time.

I know its possibly a hackneyed debate, but it is women who edit and write for women's magazines, and have been doing so for the last 30+ years.
And then along come women like Jane Pratt, who get forced to change and then kicked out by the male media owners. I'm not trying to make this man vs woman, and I know that girls do a lot of damage to each other as well, but I just felt it was important to mention that the magazines which are actually good for girls, like Bust or Bitch are female-__owned__.
(I really overuse the italics, huh?)

I think in some cases the way things can be less exploitative (but not perfect, I don't claim to have all the answers) is if there is more knowledge about choices available. That you don't have to dress in skanky clothes if you don't want to. Or that if you choose to take off your clothes for money, you don't have to sleep with the clientale even if they're offering to pay you for that as well. And of course it would be nice if there were other opportunities available to people who feel that sex-work is their only choice to earn an income. Etc.
