She should talk to Slater about how to improve your social media numbers. I'm sure mummy and daddy would buy her some likes and followers.

A question: does NZ First align with any of the Auckland non-parties, or do they stay away from local body elections?

Len Brown got 47% of the votes last time. With MMP, if the 164,000 people who voted for him went (e.g) with Labour/Green, then that would probably have give him a majority of councillors, given that most of the trailing candidates were vaguely left.

Isn't the right-wing council an artefact of FPP wards?

The only reason why centre-left runners (Brown / Goff) are in front for Auckland mayor is that the right is split and has nobody sane lined up for the job. If Nicki Kaye ran, they might have a chance, but I guess she wants a career in national politics.

That situation might not last for ever. A fair voting system would result in a council that was at least representative, and a mayor would need to have the confidence of a majority on that council. If that turned out a right-winger, it would be because people voted for them.

Even better, MMP and an indirectly elected mayor.

Nationally, we don't elect a president and a parliament of FPP MPs who might or might not have confidence in that president.

MMP is a fair voting system that represents all groups and ideas. With MMP in Auckland, you'd have a council that represents the voters, and by having council elect the mayor, an administration with the backing of a majority in council.

  • Speaker: The real balance sheet,

With an increasing exodus to Netflix and the internet, TV viewing figures have got to be heading south fast. News is too expensive for the hourly revenue it generates. Bought in film and drama, which would have been the big cash cow a few years ago is getting less and less attractive when $15 a month (including Unotelly – and a third the price of Sky’s cheapest package) gets you better movies and no adverts.

Which leaves TV channels struggling for the portion of society whose life revolves around the travails of reality TV characters and have a need for such content on a timely basis to discuss with other sad fucks. When Netflix starts to hit that market (or Endemol and the like just start selling directly) then that goes. Not to mention that such things go out of fashion, eventually.

  • Access: How many agencies does it take…, in reply to linger,

Yes, you probably would. Although it's possible that in the future the total cost and depreciation of a solar PV system might be such that it's cheaper than the direct method.

Solar panels are optimised to generate power at a fixed voltage - around 18v. If you drain too much current, the voltage goes down and the power goes down by more.

The power converted by a hot water element is proportional to the square of the actual input voltage - to develop full power on a 240v element, you'd need a series solar array of about 15 panels. Even if you made that, it would only work well in full sunlight - in shade, the panel voltage would drop and the panel would be running well below full possible output.
