Hot water cylinder? Usually over 2kW, so you'd need a *lot* of panels, or a battery, *or* and I'm not sure these are available, an inverter that instead of delivering 240v or nothing, adapts its output voltage to match the available input current, which would work with a heating element (but not most other loads). Bonus points for hacking one of those together.

Solar PV with no batteries and no grid tie would be fairly useless (except for special purposes), not least because you generally want lights on during the hours of darkness.

  • Polity: The pantheon of sporting dominance,

English rugby might have a lot of money, but their player pool is quite small, being limited to their core of posh southerners - and of course soccer has a lot more money, especially at club level. It's the same everywhere else, rugby (union) is a minority sport in all the top countries, even South Africa where the majority population mostly play soccer.

There's rather a lot of sunk cost in dams, windfarms and geothermal. Are you suggesting we demolish them all in favour of home solar panels and wind turbines?

Not to mention that it's rather more efficient and sustainable to generate power as a community resource rather than individually (and given that growing and slicing silicon ingots at home is a bit ambitious, home generation just moves the dependency on a central resource into manufacturing).

Just because the system of central power generation is currently organised to exploit the many for the benefit of the few doesn't mean that it isn't a good idea per se.

  • Polity: The pantheon of sporting dominance,

I don't believe Australia has ever lost an international championship in Aussie Rules.
Or the US in American Football (but not Baseball).

It's quite simple for a country to dominate a sporting code really - just choose a game that isn't the majority code in any other substantial developed country.

When we have Google self-riding bikes, the need to park and lock will disappear.

  • Hard News: A Stand for Quaxing,

I just stick a little padlock through my disk brake. Stops anyone from riding off.

Sure, anyone could pick it up and put it in a van, but it isn't that great a bike to start with.

The roles of (senior) officers and councillors seem to have reversed in Wellington. The CEO and his mates drive policy, and our ex-Green mayor fronts for it. Actually standing up for the policies she was voted in on (not building motorways, white elephant runways and other pork for the construction industry) is somehow considered unethical.

Meanwhile, we receive a weekly propaganda leaflet from the National & Labour contenders professionally disguised as a local paper – although, credit to them, they are certainly showing the way to disguise ones campaign leaflets as a newspaper. It even has car ads and stuff.

  • Hard News: Bringing an order Auckland…,

It's all because of the undemocratic FPP voting system. (even though if the right are split, that will leave a gap for the left to dominate).

    Councils should have:
    - fair voting, which would allow individual parties to run under their established identities (and that nutjob candidates like Quax would reflect on the party that endorsed them at a national as well as local level)
    - mayors (or leaders) indirectly elected by council, requiring (and ensuring) that they hold majority support
    - ballot box voting on general election day (requiring a short or long council to align the dates)

Are we talking lifeguards, clean water in lakes and rivers or drinkable water coming out of the taps?
