  • Hard News: Circumstance and coincidence, in reply to Sara Bee,

Yes! It was hilarious! I’ve been trying to understand what it means about the way he presents himself…

Over on The Standard they're claiming it's his tell, how you can tell he's lying (I figure more likely it has something to do with his lips moving) - I guess you have to have seen him behave like more than once.

And that's the fundamental problem with secret agencies: the secrecy necessary for them to do their jobs effectively also protects their mistakes and abuses of power.

Yes it implies that should have extra, independent oversight, rather than less - organisations like this need to have whistle blowers standing there looking over their shoulders, whistles to their lips

  • Hard News: Circumstance and coincidence,

Here’s a direct link to the 3news report so you don’t have to look at Kiwiblog

  • Access: Your Relationship With Disability, in reply to Sacha,

Ta. How can the rest of us help you with that?

probably not much at the moment – the issue seems to be quiet at the moment while the MoT ponders (I already wrote them), when the city holds hearings I’ll go down and make my point

In the mean time my biggest problem is our lefty councilors who seem to think that bikes trump all … I got the brush off when I wrote them. All they have to do is put the south bound lane on the other side of the (1-way) road – not only would it leave parking within just-started-using-crutches hobbling distance of the physio pool (about 100m) but it would also save a bunch of street trees, and run the bike lane on the Uni side of the road rather than forcing all the students to cross SH1

  • Access: Your Relationship With Disability,

I dunno (H) or (A) - last year I was certainly disabled, my temporary parking permit ran out last month at about the right time, threw it away.

So I've made a temporary visit to the disabled community, but not quite left ... I'm still fighting the city who want to take ALL the on-street parking places from the block that contains the local physio pool to make bike lanes, I know the pool got me walking and I could never have accessed it without those spaces

  • Hard News: Softly, softly, in reply to Russell Brown,

It’s easy to forget that these were the people who risked their lives to encourage their Parliament to send Yanukovych packing in February. Depicting the whole thing as a neo-Nazi putsch, as Pilger seems to, is just weird.

again I'm just repeating my friend's personal experience, he grew up with these people (in the west of the Ukraine) - this was his characterization of the kids he grew up with. He's not a fan of the other guys either, and is happy to be settling here.

  • Hard News: Softly, softly, in reply to Russell Brown,

There are certainly some bad actors in the Ukranian government, but to claim as Pilger does that they’re all neo-Nazis is palpably untrue. Letting elections take place seems appropriate.

I tried very hard not to godwin the thread on the first post .... but "nazi" would have been the word my friend used (and remember he comes from that part of the Ukraine)

  • Hard News: Softly, softly,

so one of my neighbours is a recent immigrant from the Ukraine - his take on what's happening there is largely "a pox on all their houses" .... he doesn't see any good actors in the current conflict and says that what we see in the media is pretty inaccurate

(for the record he's from the western part, not the 'Russian' part)

last time I talked to him he said he thought people should decide region by region who they wanted to be - which is sort of what's happening I guess

I don't think you get formal "enemies" without a declaration of war

And presumably an actual declaration of war; something that seems to have gone out of fashion these days
